View Full Version : Ghostly noise from heating vent!

I've noticed during this cold spell that, until the heating warms up, I'm getting a very low, melancholic whistle from the central heating vent.

It's the sort of noise that should accompany the tumbleweed icon or that you'd make in a scary situation to scare other people. Does that make sense?

Anyone else getting this?

Oh yes very funny.

That vent could also be called the centre heating vent. Sheesh, lucky I didn't write about the hair conditioning unit!

Im not sure how the vents work or where the fans are I guess its just a dry bearing somewhere?

I used to have a Ford that did this.
I think it was the bearing on the fan, but it never failed, just wailed at me until it warmed up.

My BOV does this, it's quite eerie late at night :)

It only happens when the car is cold, light throttle and just coming on boost (0-0.1 bar or so)

Maybe it's because I'm easier on the throttle when its cold, I suppose when it's hot I give it more stick so it's boosting quicker and doesn't linger around that point, when its cold, I try to keep it off boost for the first few miles.

Hmm.... that's exactly the sort of driving I'm doing when I hear it. I'm pretty sure the BOV isn't in the dead centre of the car though.
