Mike Posted November 7, 2005 Share Posted November 7, 2005 Since I bought my car nine months ago I've had this 'clunk' sound whenever I come to a stop... this has got gradually louder.. took it into the garage and they advised new shocks... so that could be why the ride is so hard? also I was aware that I needed new front tyres, but holding off because of funds... so anyway got the lot done today, new shocks, and new Pirelli P6000's...! I did a bit of digging around on here to see what peeps thought of these tyres and they sound fine... It's an N/A, so I'm not exactly putting crazy BHP through them, so should be decent enough? Mike Posted November 7, 2005 Author Share Posted November 7, 2005 All of that clunking sounds familiar... sounds crazy but mine sounded the worst coming down though the twist’s of a multi-story car park... not sure why that sticks in my mind?! the motion downwards, combined with the stop-start at low speeds on a angle all made it sound horrible... but was more of a solid 'something moving that shouldn't be' rather than a rattle.. I was the same, I asked the garage to check everything (I read something on here about drop links?), tighten everything around the suspension etc.. and their conclusion was the shocks need doing.. For price, to fit new stock shocks was £320, and the tyres were £88 each, fitted - which was comparable with mytyres, so asked them to fit... Hopefully all of this will make a difference to the ride / handling etc... for the best part of 500 notes!! Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Mike Posted November 7, 2005 Author Share Posted November 7, 2005 clunking has gone, but now less obvious clunking sound has been uncovered... think the back ones will need doing after Christmas... but the good news is it's like driving a different car...!! I used to avoid any type of drains or miner holes in the road and now... like riding on air!! The only drawback I think, is because I'm not feeling every bump, and with new tyres... which I'm fairly sure aren't going to wash away at the sight of some moisture on the road... let just say I'm driving it a tad more aggressively than I was... DShox Posted November 7, 2005 Share Posted November 7, 2005 couldnt help noticing this and I'd advise NOT worrying and spending money on a nothingness problem. I had a clunk and this is what happened: 1. suspect exhaust poor fitment - no joy (£20) 2. changed rear drop links - no joy (£90) 3. Toyota checkout of wheel assembly - fine (£70) 4. Tein checkout of whole suspension assembly including suspected worn pillow bearing top mounts + spring settings - good as new (£115) Diagnosis - spent a decent amount of cash finding the noise but actually it is just that I have a circuit suspension setup that hates road defects and so clunks. The poundage on the springs are so high that there aint much give so bumps are heard. If you want peace of mind (especially when coming to sell), get a statement from your specialist stating that the suspension set up is fine.
