Brake Caliper Painting

Ok so I've read the threads on this and have bought some paint to do it next weekend. But... have people painted the rear brakes as well as the front?

If so does anyone have any pics of rear ones?

I have bought some decals and there are large ones - presumably for the front, and small ones - but I can't see where these would fit on the back?

Cheers,

Nick

Is there any chance of a couple of white arrows on the photo with a "paint this bit" and a "whatever you do don't paint this bit"....???????????????????///////

No, sorry, no white arrows, you'll have to make do with red ones. :nyah:

Just remove the pads, and paint the caliper! thats all i did! -

Ok I only actually painted the visible part of the caliper, and not the back of it (side closest to shock/spring) - took me a hour to do all 4.

Can I just add....

If anyone is going to paint their UK brakes. PLEASE remove the pins first. I've had to do a brake pad change on two cars with painted UK brakes and trying to get the pins out becomes a real bitch! It's like they were welded in!

oh dear, too late for me there

I dunno how other people managed this in 2 1/2 hours!!

It took me about an hour and a half to put masking tape on, then 4 hours to paint the calipers and drums at the back (3 coats on calipers, 2 on drums).

That's 5 and a half, + jacking up, wheels off, searching for wheel nut key etc!! Think I'll stick to the day job!

Anyway, all done now. Decals to put on tomorrow then will be finished. Photos to come.

One other thing. No-one has mentioned the torture of having to sit in the most uncomfortable positions ever in order to do this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What do you mean by "remove the pins"? I'm doing the job this week and don't wanna' screw myself for later work. What about prep also? My discs have a bit of surface rust looking corrosion on the hub section that attaches to the wheel. Any advice on how to prep? Sand or should I get the dremel out before I prime em?

I used a wire brush.

BTW you definitely need to wire brush the calipers also before you paint them.

Most hubs have quite a lot of rust sitting on them and to remove it all would require some serious rubbing so I just smoothed mine off.

Once you have wire brushed everything there will be a lot of dust everywhere so you need to clean up really well before painting.

Worth doing it outside or with dust mask on.

I'll post up photos of mine tonight... used black Hammerite smooth on the hubs.

Sounds great. Thanks for the clarification on the pins. How hard are they to take apart? Anybody have a link to a thread on disassembly? Have just about everything I need. Do you think the hub section of the discs will need high-temp caliper paint, or can I just use a standard black spray can? May start this in a few hours, but gotta' get outta' work first.

Dude, would it be too much trouble for you to take pics step-by-step when you do this? I'm ready to do this too, just unsure about taking the calipers apart.
