I have complained about my lack of light for some time, and accidentally ended up on some HID sites just now. Can't remember why or how..

 

I think I have concluded that a 6000K low-beam would be okay, but I just have one question..

 

If someone wanted to upgrade their whole lighting to HIDS, would they have to buy two different kits and have four ballasts under the bonnet? That sounds like a lot of metal boxes to hide away.

Normally Carl0s people dont use HIDs on the Main beam. They take a while to 'warm up' and the flash is usually quite short (i can PM what i mean if you like)

 

i have low beam, 6000K HID units, and the difference is amazing!

 

speak to Nic on here, he can get them for you, and at a pleasant price - no cutting/chopping required

 

and to fully answer your question, yes 4 ballasts for 2 sets, each bulb unit requires a ballast for the crazy voltage required

That's great then. So I'll do my low-beam and I'll be able to see. I was coming home (to Manchester) from Ilkley in West Yorkshire today and the tomtom took me up a huuuuuge hill and through about 5 miles of seriously narrow winding dark track.. that'd be great if I could've seen!

Yes.

 

And be very careful buying aftermarket HID kits. A lot of them are shite and /or counterfeits. I would only buy ones from personal recommendation as a lot of folks have been, frankly, ripped off.

I've gone for some of the ones from Nic as I know he won't see us wrong.

yeah - quite literally, my main beam makes no real difference to the distance i can see (it basically illuminates the area to the right in front of the car) - its fantastic - main beam, fogs and hids is awesome!

I had thought there was quite a bit of variation in the kits out there and over on eBay. I think I'll give Nic a PM right about.. now. Thanks :)

I wouldn't touch the eBay ones with your bargepole.

 

My HIDs from Nic should be arriving this week. I'm planning to do before and after photos and a small review. I'll let you know if they're worth the £306

Given a choice I would go for 4100k/4200k but Nic was only offering 6500K.

4200k are apparently, from what I've read on the specialised lighting forums, the whitest/brightest you can get. They say that going further up the kelvin scale just makes them more blue, or eventually purple, but gives less actual illumination.

I agree with Jake (unusual for me:stickpoke ) buy carefully...as some of the ballest units with some kits are vulnerable to water ingress and often will only last 3 months, although fitting them where they are vulnerable to water can increase the risk (on cheaper units) dont fit them under the headlight units, and make sure they are well insulated from water...especialy on cheaper units!

 

Dont bother with high beam...its pointless, and it created allsorts of ghost electrical probs when someone tried to fit four on my car..so i now just have the two...always good to purchase an extra spare bulb..coz they do go!!!!

 

Also..I reccomend the UK glass headlight units make sure the sills are ok and dont let in condensation..as this caused one of my bulbs to go

Got a set of Nics HID's on mine, They do make a huge difference, more so on reflective signes as they light up from about 4 times the distance.

 

Don't use my fogs at all now where i did before the HID's were in.

 

though std fogs and HID low beam look stupid as there a differernt colour.

TBH the 6500k kit I source is not that blue compared to some of the other kits I've tested, in comparison they are more like 5000-5500K, ie. white with a hint of blue.

 

I tested loads of kits on my car, from various suppliers to see which gave the best nighttime visibility. There was a huge difference in illumination between some of the kits and the majority of the cheap kits I tried were absolutely crap. The kit I decided on, was not the cheapest by any means, but gave the best performance, included a 1 year warranty (teh only one that gave a warranty in fact) and seemed the best value for money.

 

The members in the recent group buy should receive theirs this week, so hopefully there'll be some more independant feedback, for anyone else considering fitting an HID kit.

I've got one of Nic's kits fitted and I'm well pleased.

As for where to fit the ballasts, o/s is fairly easy, gap between the wing and the top of the suspension (although I've fabricated a flat plate out of stainless so I don't have to drill the bodywork)

The n/s is more of a problem, currently double sided to the front of the battery:thumbs: I was gonna make a bracket to mount under the headlight but reading previous posts about keeping dry this might not be such a good idea?

I might now try fabricating a bracket to mount it vertical infront of the battery area?

I must point out that there is some room on the inside of each wing towards the front that seems ideal until you look above and realise that the ends of the wing 'water channels' are directly above so there is a good cahnce that water could run off and soak them if mounted here!!
