I decided to try and fit the Pioneer DEH-P1Y (aka DEH-P80MP) that Nic got me but I seem to have stumbled on a small problem :)

I picked up the PC2-17-4 Autoleads adapter in advance but having removed the standard double DIN and put the Pioneer in the plugs don't match.

The Pioneer comes with a small next of cables with bare ends like normal:

http://www.megaboost.co.uk/supra/mine/stereo/pioneer-loom-01.JPG

and this is the connection on the back of the unit:

http://www.megaboost.co.uk/supra/mine/stereo/pioneer-plug-00.JPG

And this is the PC2-17-4:

http://www.megaboost.co.uk/supra/mine/stereo/pc2-17-4-02.JPG

http://www.megaboost.co.uk/supra/mine/stereo/pc2-17-4-00.JPG

The standard one looks like this:

http://www.megaboost.co.uk/supra/mine/stereo/standard-plugs-00.JPG

And the CD Changer controller:

http://www.megaboost.co.uk/supra/mine/stereo/changer-control-00.JPG

So....

1. Do I need a different Autoleads adapter to the one I've got?

2. Will an alternative adapter bypass the stock amp?

And a few random pics of behind the dash for anyone who likes such things:

So I have no music at the moment but on the plus side I've managed to get my Toyota single din tray to fit and the stereo looks nice :)

I cant remember exactly but you dont plug the adaptor into the loom that came out of the back of the stock stereo.

Follow it down and it unplugs again, one on the left side of the transmission tunnel, other I cant remember, it should plug in there.

I did it 3 years agao so my memory is a little sketchy.

Cheers!

That's potentially one end of the mystery solved then :)

The only problem I have then is that the Autoleads doesn't fit into my stereo :(

Sorry didnt notice that, 2 choices, see if auto leads do one to fit your setero if not, cut the stereo end off the auto leads loom and solder the loom that came with the stereo to it.

I suspect some chopping might be in order with this one, seems to be a bit of an odd connector on the head unit - I'll have another look at it tomorrow, I've put the dash together again now so I'll just have to whistle and listen to the exhaust in the morning :)

Thanks again.

Hi Michael,
:( sorry, but I can't offer you any suggestions as I had my unit fitted and the appropriate harnesses ordered by the store,... although they did fcuk up the speaker lines which I ended up doing myself.

From what little I remember the harnes used the orginal plug and somehow used the existing wires so I didn't have anything left over.

Sorry I couldn't have been more help :(
Hope you sort it soon.

BTW: Don't forget to download my Supra animation for you stereo from the download section ;)

Thanks for the input :)

I don't mind messing with the wires a bit, I just wanted to check there wasn't a plug and play option before destroying everything.

I'll need it :)

I'm just hoping that it's a case of joining the colours!

Hi Michael, just seen this thread, sorry about the problems you're having, if you email (nicvollans @ netvigator . com) me a photo of the part you need, I'll see if I can get from my supplier for you.

Hi Nic, not so much a problem and in no way a reflection on the item itself, I think it's just a case of the Autoleads being slightly too generic for the Pioneer, it looks as though it would fit the Kenwood one I have in the Punto no problem.

I'm just going to use the loom that came with the headunit and mash it into the autoleads, most of the wires are marked up and colour-coded so I should be OK :)

Take lots of pics as you cut your way through the wires so you have reference to the orginal colours etc.

Update: It is your fault Nic ;)

Well not quite but it's the downside of buying overseas apparently. I just popped down to my local hi-fi establishment to see if they offered any different Autoleads options before I get my cutters out and had a chat with the chap behind the counter. He's an obnoxious git (Unicar, Leeds) but after he'd finished rolling his eyes at the fact I'd 'imported' rather than paying £200 more from them he showed me the connector that comes with the 'UK' DEH-P80MP.

Basically the UK sourced models come with an ISO connector on the loom rather than offering bare wires for us to connect up, this would have enabled 'plug and play' with the PC2-17-4.

So cutting a joining of wires needed, a small price to pay for a £200 saving over retail.

(Apparently this is a common issue with items purchased on the internet or from overseas, not sure if this was sales bull to try and explain why we get ripped off but it's worth considering when buying.)

glad its sorted.

glad its sorted.

It isn't yet, I've only done the theory :)

Working late tonight too so it'll be dark by the time I get back... and it's raining... and the garage is full.... might have to manage without for a few more days.

michael
24-10-05, 21:41
Excitement got the better of me so despite it being dark I thought I'd have another go....

I began by getting the Autoleads adapter, snipping the end off and then wiring it up to the small loom that came with the Pioneer - all wires the same colour, matched up to the instructions.... happy days....

So out to the car, dashboard trim off again and started following the white block connector that was in the back of the standard stereo down to see if there was another plug to disconnect... nothing.... it just disappears down the side of the dash into the plastic trunking in the passenger footwell and off to somewhere exotic, even if there is a plug down here the new loom won't reach it anyway :(

So I checked the existing white connector in the hope it had somehow changed overnight and now fit the Autoleads - of course it hasn't so I've still made no progress at all.

The block connector I have is pictured here:

http://www.megaboost.co.uk/supra/mine/stereo/behind-stereo-00.JPG

Hard to see any detail but it's the out of focus white orb at the left hand side above where the metal cage bolts on, it's the male to this one:

http://www.megaboost.co.uk/supra/mine/stereo/standard-plugs-00.JPG

So at the moment it's looking like the only option I have is to chop the autoleads off the pioneer loom and then connect this up to the wiring coming from within the dash, something I'd really like to avoid if possible :(

If anyone has any thoughts on this please speak up, I want to play with my new toy!

Here's a thread from 2002, That I said the same thing. http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=2294&highlight=stereo

Have another look, the one down the left side if the tunnel is at the end of the trunking that goes across the passenger footwell to the sil then on to the stock amp.

Cheers John, I'll have another look over it in my lunch hour tomorrow, I couldn't see much tonight, it was mainly touch and pray :)

Michael, you need to disconnect the two white plugs circled in my picture, this is where the auto leads adapter plugs into, this bypasses the stock amp and the stereo powers the speakers. Hope that helps.

michael
24-10-05, 22:22
Ah! I looked at those and then followed them but they seemed to have a lot of wires in that went to locations that weren't musical :)

I need to be more brave!

Those plugs are the output from the amp, to the speakers.
The white auto lead connectors plug into the tails, once unpluged from the sockets mounted on the floor. Hope that makes sence.
Anyway, hurry up with some finished pictures!!!
I was looking at this model and would like to see it fitted!!

I'll stick it in tomorrow, working or not you'll get a picture :)

I've done test fittings and stuff already and it looks well, I've also taken it as an opportunity to move my AVCR and SAFC out of the way to make the dash tidy again, looking forward to getting it working.

Thanks to everyone for your help to date, I hate wires :)

Ok, no worries.
Wires are fine, as long as you don't let the smoke out

We have power, we have blue lights.... didn't have chance to check for sound and stuff though, I got into work early because traffic was light and decided to take the dash apart with a view to connecting the unit at lunchtime.

I couldn't resist plugging in though - the autoleads went into the place everyone said it would so thanks for that - at the very least I have a pretty ornament to fill the hole in the dash :)

I will try to finish off at lunchtime and post some pics when I get home tonight.

michael
25-10-05, 19:06
Well I managed to get it in at lunchtime but had to wait until I was home for the pics. Overall I'm really pleased with it (now it's finally in) - still using the standard speakers until I get around to ordering a set of Focals for the front to go with the ones I have ready to go in the back but it sounds so much better than the vintage Toyota setup that was in there

I still need to suss everything out but it's a cracking system, much nicer than the similar JVC I have in the Punto and an absolute bargain when sourced through Nic.
