View Full Version : Kenwood mask surround trouble....
Right, just installed my kenwood mask from my oul car in the new supra. took the dash out, put a halfords try underneath and the stereo in the top DIN. The trouble is the facia surround won't fit behind the dash!
I remember when I bought the stereo and had a mazda the guy in the shop told me I would need a different surround to fit it in a jap car like a mazda, but I didn't.
At the moment I have no surround and you can see down the sides of the head unit, which doesn't look good.
Anyone know where I can get something to sort this out?
Does nobody else have a kenwood Mask!!
YES mate, that is, i've got the Kenwood in me SIERRA at mo', but, when it
was in the Soop i couldn't use the little plastic surround...cos the head unit
was bolted slightly BELOW the dash level (cos it bolted to the 'cage' thingie)
and YES i had the silver sharp edges showing ! !
I copped-out and used a Balck Marker and coloured all the silver edges BLACK
! ! ! ! !
If you looked at the Head closer you could see it was missing something, but,
anyone just looking at the dash casually COULDN'T.
Post a pic of what it looks like with the surround on so we can see your problem. I have a mask but its a TV mask so probably completely different but my surround went on ok.
Ok will do. its a bit dark now though so it will have to be in the morning. :D
Is it like THIS:-
this is my model (though not MY car/dash ! !)
On me Soop the surround would be on TOP of the 'dash' but the headunit
was 'sunk' a little lower in and the MASK 'effect' (the 'turning-over' routine)
meant it would smack into the surround:thumbdown
I'm sure i tried to move the head unit forward, but it wouldn't (from what i
remember that is !)

i dont think you can fit one on the top because the unit is set back , heres a pic of mine , when the head unit is off the surround fits neatly , no gaps
i couldn't fit my surround on either with my mask - i reckon you could do it if you were to make some new holes in the cage so that the stereo could sit a little further out but the stock holes don't allow for it

What year is your car and is it UK or Jap because my dash does not look the same. Mine stereo isn't set back like that.

95 j spec
94 J spec. Mine is the same as that
Lets see a pic of yours Supragold
Sorry about the quality, just went and took the pics and its pitch black outside so had to use the flash to see anything.
As you can see with mine the tray under the stereo is behind the facia where as yours isn't.
My stereo is behind the dash and so it the tray underneath. I will take a photo and post it tomorrow....or maybe in a minute.
I think I will hack the sides of the clip on stereo surround and make it fit behind the dash too.....don't seem to be able to find the aftermarket surround.
ok. Here is what I have at the moment...
Sorry about the quality, I had to use my phone as my mem card reader isn't working at the moment so I can't get pics of my camera.
That's EXACTLY how mine was ! !
Problem solved!
Solved with.....a gas hob, a stanley knife, and 10 minutes.
I cut the sides off the surround (not the face of the surround, just the bits that go down the sides) and the top (the whole top including the face).
I will put up some pics when I get home.
looks good mate
well done on the blue peter idea, it paid off :eyebrows:
i just bought a new Kenwood, so sounds like i'll have to do the same :(
But at least i'm aware of the problem, rather than feeling gutted i just laid out for a new stereo i couldnt use.
Cheers

So did you cut off a little from each side and the complete top??
If so did you have to glue/stick the surround on, as dosent it clip on the top and bottom of the sub frame?
Ok, knocked up a quick picture in paint to show what I chopped off. I am not going to pull the whole dash out again!
Sorry about the quality...only spent about 1 min drawing it.
The red bits are the bits I cut off. Both sides, the top and the top section of the face.
Hope this helps!
Great work there :) cheers i'm sure your art teacher is proud ;)
Does it stay on ok then? what about the clips?
Thanks
SV
There are no clips left on the top, and the tray filling the other DIN gap underneath holds it on anyway.
If you don't have the tray underneath I am pretty sure it will stay anyway due to being pressed up against the back of the dash.
I reckon I could have handed that in as my final piece of A level art work
An old post, but just to say Kenwood in the US have a thin surround as an option for just this!
I should be getting one the weekend :)
Part number for single DIN tray designed for the Supe 55521-16030 which locates with the inner cradle £14.81 inc VAT.
It has a slight lip on the inner bottom edge which stops stuff fallign out if your mums driving the car.
Not sure if you can fit the tray below the head unit though. I didn’t spend a load of time looking at - just stuffed it in!
Note the top corners of the tray have a radius edge which will mean flipping the tray around so i dont know if the holes and pins will locate?
I’ve just installed my Alpine HU and I’m having the same problem anybody know of an alpine equivalent of the mentioned Kenwood part?
I don’t fancy cutting up the surround. How have other you others with Alpine managed?
My HU is a Alpine IVA-D100RB.
Cheers in advance for any help
