View Full Version : Another speaker question (with a twist)
I have bypassed the stock amp with a Sony 4x52watt headunit and have to change the speakers as they are at the end of their life :thumbdown
My question is what would be an ideal speaker setup for front and rear given that its not gonna be externally amplified? :badidea:
Budget is not stupid amounts quite obviously but all options considered.......
Most people go for Focal or Infinity.
The standard fronts are 4 " and rears 6".
Most people use 6.5" for the fronts (component) and 6.5" rears when they upgrade.
Pop into Halfrauds and listen to their speakers. Having done that after I had bought my infinitys, I may have gone for the alpine range.
The 6.5" rears will go in fairly easily. If you decide to go for larger than 4" for the front, you'll have to make up a bracket/mount - a template is available on this ice thread.
How important is bass for you?
Yeah have been looking at Alpine too. Bass is important but I don't want too much. My old car had 3 subs and a kilowatt of power which was great until my ears started to bleed so this is a calm down car lol.
Does anyone make the brackets to save me the hassle? Also where are the tweeters or are there any?
Looking at these:
SPR-176A - components £89.99
SPR-17LP - 16.5cm speakers £84.99
Total: £174.98
Here's the link for the front larger speaker template. Not sure if anyone can make it for you....

Stock tweeters are on the top of dash, either side, bottom of the windscreen if that makes sense. You can replace these, there's a guide here somewhere. I'd just leave them.
I wanted a simple subwoofer solution and keep my spare tyre e.t.c. I went for a 10" rockford Fostgate punch mounted on a off the shelf 10" box which I placed with the back lying flat, so it was a sort of wedge shape parallel with the rear window - fitted no problems. I used a small alpine amp to power it up, which I screwed on to the side of the sub box. As the hatch/boot is exposed on a supra, the single 10" sub is more than enough to make your ears hurt!

Speaker choices is more down to personal preference IMO. If they are only going to be run off the headunit then I would say 80-£100 for each pair is about right. Just listen to a few first.
If however you was going to amplify them, then I would recommend looking at £150-300 budget range or even £300-600 for SQL.
Just don't rush and choose the ones that you like.
