Are these available? Basically, I'd love to have a ton of cds available while driving but don't want to have a cd changer or connect up an Ipod.

Is there a unit that has a built-in or removable hard-drive?

Thanking you.

Why don't you want to use an iPod?
I recommend you try it.

'Playlists' are great.
A playlist offers you better organization and management of the various music files on your ipod by controlling what files are played and in what order.

I'm not sure you can create 'playlists' with a HD.

Ipods are so damn expensive and I find playlists are a novelty that would soon wear thin.

I've just found the right combination of words and Google has listed loads of HDD units.

WTF are they so expensive. HD's are dirt cheap these days. All I want is a tuner/cd plyer with HD. Nothing flash. No DVD playback, fancy graphics or navigation stuff. Surely £400 should be absolute top for a mutts nuts unit. Seems like a rip-off to me.

older generation ipods are cheaper.

What a bloody stupid idea that is!
I can't believe someone actually went to all that effort - they didn't even use a notebook hard drive.

I used to have a Sony MEX-1HD with a built in 10gig hdd. Great head-unit, think you can pick them up on ebay for less than £400 now - they used to be £1200 brand new.

Have a look at the new top model JVC, forget the model number, comes with 6gig free HDD space for music. Looks a VERY well specced unit, and was on sale for under £500 on CarAudioDirect last week

The JVC KD-NX901 - basically a not too good sat nav (IMHO) with 6gig (from a 20gig) HDD for your music. Plays from SD Flash memory card too.

Cheapest I have seen it is audio66.com for £749.98 delivered. (UK Mainland)

It was definately 499.99 on CAD, i think it has gone back up to £750 now though as they have run out of stock.

The high end JVC's have always been very good imo, but i would agree with the sat nav, any single din turn-by-turn unit wont perfrom that well compared to a full size screen.
