Supra, 3000GT or RX-7

I have pondered over the last year or so about these three fave Jap cars of mine.

I'm discounting an NSX as although I think they are excellent it just seems that they are limited in their ability to be modified or somehow it feels they need to be left alone.....

 

Anyhoo after much reasearch I can honestly say that the mkiv Supra seems the way to go.

The 3000GT has soooo many gizmos and such bulk that to me it would mean constant attention and fear of various things going wrong......same really for the rex.

the RX-7 is my fave car for looks in the whole wide world.but again....scares of bushes, suspension.......engine rebuilds....astronomical running costs.....

 

the Supe seems it could hack more day to day drivng....and being a Toyota and having a very solid 3 litre straight 6 appeals to me.

 

When I get one of these babies I'll certainly be looking for as near to standard as possible....would accept a filter and exhaust system...maybe aftermarket alloys....

Can i find standard Supras easily? :)

If you're comparing to GT turbos'/Rx7's then you must be looking for a TT Supra?

 

Your reasoning for the Supra sounds good, few other cars can be modified to such performance levels at a low cost but maintain great reliability. GTO/3000GT are a different league in pretty much every aspect, RX7's are fantastic track cars but don't have the same comfort or reliability as the Supra when modified.

 

Standard (or near standard) Supra's are still fairly common, but not as much as they used to be! Have a look in the Cars for Sale section for some guidelines.

 

The hard decision now is to choose which model Supra you want!

I know the NA's are quite a bit cheaper....but 220bhp is still not to be sniffed at. Trouble is it's hard getting a manual NA....isn't it...

 

if I bought the NA I'd bet a months wages I'd be wishing I'd bought the turbo a few months later....

Hard to get a manual N/A? I think not! There are lots around and coming off the boats weekly.

 

Although, as Homer has said, it would seem as if our new found friend is looking for a TT and a bog standard TT will be harder to find than a modified but are still around.

When I was deciding I heard some bad stories about the GT3000's reliability. I didn't look into whether they were real concerns or not - just the rumour put me off.

And, although I love the looks of the Rex, I'm a bit too spanner-shy to be worrying about the engine all the time. And the fuel consumption. And the oil consumption...

 

Altogether, I'm dead chuffed I decided on the Supra in the end. And I'm really pleased with the one I eventually got. :D

This is how I feel. The Supra just seems so much more sensible yet offers equal or more than the others.

 

An NA Supra isn't too much faster than my MR2 Mk1 though......to 60 that is....so it's definately got to be a turbo...manual too.

Do you have a budget figure in mind?

That narrowed it down a bit :)

 

It's going to be a UK or Jspec 6 spd TT, there's a few of those up few of those up for sale at the moment - what's your budget?

 

A higher budget would allow a facelift or even VVTI model....

although I have been studying loads of Jap cars since I first got a Mazda years back I am always open to learn stuff i dont know so nothing is obvious to me as it may be to you guys so please feel free to advise all you wish....it's much appreciated indeed.

 

As for a Budget.....well......10-13k.....should get me a nice enough example of a standard car.

 

I'm not fussed if it's a J-spec or UK spec. I guess the UK would be favourable with fully doc'd S/H....providing it has reasonable mileage. I know some J-spec examples have lower mileages than equivalent UK specs.......i guess I'd have to assess nearer the time of purcahse.

So long as the car has been serviced correctly the mileage really shouldn’t be an issue.

 

That’s the benefit with the UK's: in most cases the mileage has a record, with Imports you never know for sure (Unless you have a good import agent).

 

I know someone who just sold a 98 VVTI 6spd with 104k miles for £9k, though this was an exceptionally low price... For your budget you should be able to get a stock (ish) fresh import or even UK spec car. Personally I'd go with an import sourced from Jurgen. Jurgen has imported many high quality cars for members here and has a 1st class reputation for on this board. If you have the budget, and are prepared to wait a couple of months you can’t go wrong.

I'm currently trying to sell the supra and will get an RX-7 next. But I will kill the only factor thats against the RX-7, the engine! Will put an 5.7L V8 from a Corvette into the RX-7 body :)

 

Thats reability, torque, power, easy on gas oh and torque.

 

What are you thinking of! The RX-7 is a light, well balanced car. Sticking a huuuge heavy V8 in the front will destroy the cars best feature -the handling! Completely pointless mate, unless you're another "drag racer"

 

Before you take any drastic action I recommend you ask Chris Wilson what he thinks of your 'project' ;)

I will be scouring the many and various places that advertise the Supra.....I want to do as much homework (while I save) as poss to ensure I build up a healthy knowledge of the Supra.

Im half minded to quit on the mk1 mr2 project, sell it and drive a banger until the £££ are ready... :violin:

You should put some more homework into it ;) The LSx engine is full alu and weights exactly the same as the 13B mazda engine with all the turbo pipework and everything.

 

Most swaps are just around 20kg heavier then before with the V8 in it and still have the same weight distribution.

Are you totally sure about this?

If you've ever seen a rotary on the bench, it's hard to believe how a V8 can *ever* compare in size and weight. :whistle:

Its not only the rotary engine its the two turbos, all the pipework, intercooler and all this stuff. And in the end the rotary is steel and the V8 is aluminium. LSx engines are really compact in size for what they are and because of their simple technique they are pretty light too.
