Why did they bother?

Yesterday I removed the stock subwoofer, only to find it had been cut out of a cornflakes packet and glued to a huuuuuuge piece of heavy plastic

Having taken it out, there's more than enough room for a half - decent install with a small 8" sub :)

I keep hearing how Toyota were completely dedicated to reducing weight in the Supra.... so why go to all this trouble to put in a subwoofer that's complete rubbish? :conf:

Scoboblio,

I was thinking of taking mine out and putting a proper `sub tube` in the gap. As a matter of interest before I start ripping things out do you know the dimensions of the gap you now have available?

NB Was it easy to remove? any cables etc to worry about?

I'm not 100% sure on dimensions but I'll have a measure up soon

From memory you've got about 8" width and about 4" depth but don't quote me on that until I've checked.

My local ICE specialist says he'll be able to build a pretty decent install with a small sub, possibly 8" in the space. Won't be earth shattering, but that's not what I'm looking for.

It was really easy;

> Put the top half of the back seats down by pulling yer knob :tumble:

> Remove the carpet and board from the back of the boot

> The carpet on the back of the seats is held in by 4 rawlplug type things, use a small screwdriver to push in the middle and pull them out

> Remove carpet

> Take out about 6 12mm bolts holding the sub enclosure in

> Cut the wire on either side, there are a pair of wires in each insulator which will need re-connecting after you take the enclosure out

> Remove the enclosure and marvel at it's uselessness :)

> Put two bolts back in either side, you'll see the ones I mean :)

`Sco` thanks for that, most useful. I would be very interested in the dimensions as I intend to do a twofold sub system and want to untilise this space.

`Paul`, you have a very good point. I have also looked at this contraption in the past and debated should I or should I not take it out as I thought there may be some structural benefit to retaining it. It seem insane that Toyota with their attention to detail should make what looks like a real afterthought of a Sub (LOL) enclosure!

It's easy enough to tell mate, just look in the boot.... right at the back of it, in the middle, near the rear seats there will be a retangular plastic box sticking up a few inches.

I'm assuming that if you don't have a sub, you don't have this plastic box :conf:

Then again if you have one it's next to useless anyway
