Hey fella's with an Auto Supra if you were gunning for a 1/4 mile time or a 0-60 run is it quicker to shift manually or just leave it in Drive??
I feel its quicker by shifting manual but this could just be my imagination.

Also - with Tiptronic you can often hold it in a lower gear until the correct time for optimal boost wastage . . . I would think!

If you use manual mode you will be able to shift before red line. You really want to try and keep the revs around the point where the engine is making peak torque. So shift just above that point rather than rev the nuts off it.!
Has anyone with an auto noticed that when you are in manu mode and giving it a bit of large right foot, that when you are in 3rd (D) and want to go to OD (4th), when you switch off MANU at anything over 4k rpm soon as you do switch it off your revs rise another 2-300rpm.!!?!
Yeah, I ve noticed that.
Its strange as you would think that if you are in 3rd and then go to OD you switch to 4th. When you turn off MANU your revs change again.
We have a 4 spd Auto, so why does it happen?

when you driving along normal then press overdrive on/off it goes up and down by 1000rpm is that what you mean
dont that just act like going from 4 speed to 3 speed
i use powerbrake and in 1st and manual on and overdrive off and shift manual need to experiment more getting it off line fast.

Your in MANU mode, foot to the floor in 3rd.
Overdrive is currently off.
Revs are creaping (or rather shooting past 4500-5000rpm).
Press the MANU switch to turn it off so I am able to select OD.
But, as I switch off MANU, the revs go up another 300 odd rpm. Thats before I engage OD, which obviously sticks it in 4th bringing the revs down again.!
Most odd.!

Could it be some of the clutches unlocking, i.e. your revs increase but your actual road speed won't as your clutches are not locked together.
I know that using the manual button shifts the lock up points of the box, but unfortunately my knowledge of auto boxes is very limited.
Looks like i've started something here, however no one has said whether its quicker to leave it in drive or shift manually???:cool:
I would say that in drive there is less room for error, ie changing gear at the wrong time. But I haven't dragged mine in Manu coz I am a man and apparently only women can perfom such multi task operations like flipping thru manu gears or washing up and ironing at the same time.
Best person to ask to test would be Monkey Mark as he lives very close to the Elvington strip with timing gear I believe.
