Hullo Peeps!

Who's up for a karting meet ?

The karting venue is located Wroughton (Wiltshire) and is called Winners (http://www.actiondrome.co.uk/)
It features a (IIRC) a 500meter, indoor tarmac circuit. Good long straights and challenging hairpins.

The karts are either gas or petrol powered. The gas ones being more powerful, I've driven both ... and it's about 1 second a lap faster .. so imo it's not worth paying the extra for.

We can either have an arrive & drive (20 minutes track time) .. £25 max per person.

Or we can do a mini-grand prix ... that will feature grid starts, practice, heats & a final. That's £35 per person if memory serves. Of course, the GP would depend on numbers ... I think 8 is the minimum needed.

So, who's game ?

Awww c'mon Pete!! :D

Tbh Colin, I was quite disappointed with the "faster" karts. On the track, they don't feel any different to the petrol ones in performance. It's only when you notice your lap-times when you see it ...

I guess - the gas ones have more top-end than the petrol ones ... but there is no long enough straights to take advantage of it.

I did a 10 minute stint on the petrol ones - then a 10 minute stint on the gas ones. My laptimes on both were a consistent .. low 30's on the gas & low 31's - high 30's on the petrol ones.

Not worth the extra £5 imo.

Then you can count us both in and possibly Daniel too...if I can drag him away from his g/f :limp:

This is a great idea :)

Grand prix is the best fun - did a corporate event with HSBC years ago and came second :D Not sure I'd fair so well against you folk as opposed to a bunch of bankers :eyebrows:

Let's do it! :woot:

To make this fair it would have to be a handicap sytem a they do in horse racing. Therefore skinny guys like Marco and Christian will have to have bags of cement attached to their vehicles to give the "stouter" members a chance :D

Clarkey

:)

From the GP's that I've done -though not at Winners- ... the grid starts in the heats - everyone in each heat will be starting from each grid position. So, everyone will start on 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc ... that makes it abit more fair.

Each heat consists of maybe 5 laps. And there are perhaps 6 heats. So, if a skinny guy ;) is starting from the back and a stouter :p member is starting at the front .... :) Of course, in one heat it's possible for the skinny guysto be at the front.

Points in the heats are awarded for 1st, 2nd & 3rd finishes. The points are added up which then qualifies for the final ... maybe 10 lap.

I can discuss requirements with Winners ... as all joking aside, it's important everyone has fun and have a fair crack of the whip (in a competitive sense :) )

One of the fastest guys I've seen around a kart-track was a huge guy. The benefit of being errmmm shall we say a little more rotund, means you can take corners quicker as the kart doesn't slide as much. So it's probably 6 and two threes, to be honest.

Have you found out the availablity of the track for the dates suggested? The 8th would suit me best.

I think the poll says it all. I shall enquire about the Mini GP (This was offered - the last time we went) and booking for potentially 8th Oct.

Winners will no doubt want a deposit, so if everything is good I'll be asking for a paypal deposit.

I would love to come, have a race and meet some of the members who I wouldn't normally get to see at a local meet, but unfortunately I go on holiday on the 7th! :swear:

Clarkey
21-09-05, 16:01
Ok... just spoken to Winners. The afternoon on the 8th is free. They can't offer us the mini-GP as 12 is the minium :(

But! I did manage to get 30 minutes practice track time ... for £26 per person!!

So, in order to book ... I'll need a £10 deposit from everyone.
Paypal would be easier ... but would incurr the 4% paypal fee. I'll PM everyone my paypal address.

Clarkey
22-09-05, 11:15
Ok ..

I've made the booking and paid a £66 deposit. Otherwise we risk loosing the 8th and it getting booked up by someone else.

I've booked for the 8th October @ 2pm. For 30 minutes of track time.
So plan to arrive at 1.45pm or thereabouts.

Here's some directions http://www.outingstogether.co.uk/PlaceDetails.asp?Code=245

For the people that have NOT sent deposits please DO NOT paypal me

Sorry to do this, but with work commitments & managers beating me over the head a with stick for testing status reports ... tbh - I don't have time to remind & chase people.

Those people that have sent me their deposits - Cheers! ... the outstanding balance would £16 person.

Do you want the money on the day then?

Or would you prefer it up front so that you know there will be 12+ people attending, either way suits me. I'll be there!

Mate, I didn't quite get this.. So we don't have 12 people interested? I'm surprised. Should we get a calendar entry up to get the names down?

Just that the Grand Prix was the draw for me and it would be a shame to loose it if we do have enough interest. Second thing of course is this is the day before the JapShow final at the pod so will be a busy weekend!!

Cheers dudes :)

Clarkey
23-09-05, 12:47
No, we don't have 12 people. We have 8 maybe - that signed up on the thread.

In fairness the Mini-GP is £35 ... and for that you get less track time than £26 for 30 minutes.

The mini-gp will feature maybe 5 lap practice, 6 or 8 heats of maybe 8 laps. And then a final of maybe 20 laps. (Remember - you won't be racing in all of the heats.)

Any outstanding money owed ... please pay Winners direct (minus any deposits paid)

It was a good day out! But a bit stressfull to get there on time!!! :tomato:

I broke a cart in the 3rd session, they gave me one with the seat nearly against the steering wheel! lol! And they didnt mention it had bad brakes (probaly j-spec :looney: lol) and I nearly crashed into the wall end of the straight!!! :faint:

Good to see you all again!

Thanks for orginising Christian. Your car is running sweet btw!!! Even at low boost, very smooth and loud! hehe!

Glad you guys enjoyed yourselves. My back has a few bruises here and there .. yeah - bit of a "carry on" getting there ... but all sorted in the end. :)

An endurance race would be good next time .. depending on getting 40 odd members tho! :)

Thanks Marco ..I'm very pleased with how the conversion has turned out. I've bought an EBC from Terry - and we'll see what happens after my next trip to Phoenix. :)
