classic car insurance

I don't think the engine configuration should matter - it's the use of the car that qualifies it (potentially) for classic car insurance. If you think about a 20 year old Countach that's only used in the Summer for a few weekends that would qualify despite being a fast car, and any insurance claim on that is going to be far bigger than a single-fitted Supra.

Most 'Classic' policies require the car to be over a specified age.

However, you can also find specialist policies that work in a similar way. AON used to do a 'Roadster' policy through Royal and Sun Alliance which was pretty cheap. You could limit your mileage to 3,5 or 7,000 miles.

Be careful though. Before taking out any of these 'limited mileage', 'Classic' or 'Specialist' policies, make sure it earns you a PROPER no claims discount. There are some out there that don't earn ANY NCD at all. They have a habit of not mentioning this until the first renewal.

I can't see how they can do this.

At the end of the day if you supply copies of all your paperwork to another insurance firm proving you've not made a claim then what's the problem?

I think they just do this to say "look, this is your policy price, it's damn good and isn't getting any cheaper ok?"

They did this for my Kit this year. £130 policy for the year. It's not going to get any cheaper than that ever, but so what as it was £90 cheaper than my renewal!

[edit] should also add that it's a second policy and so won't be ported to a 'normal' car where NCD might be of help.
