Right guys.....

the aerial was snapped on my supe when i bought it and i'd like to try and figure out if i need a whole new aerial or just a mast (?).

i don't even know whether the aerial has been plugged into the back of the stereo the car has in (there's certainly no noise or anthing when the ignition or radio is switched on) so this would be my first point of call. thing is, do i have to take the dash facia off or will the unit just slide out of the single-din without removing anything at all?

just don't really want to start messing about before i know what i'm doing first of all and yes, i'm completely crap with stuff like this!! :blahblah:

cheers guys

I would firstly get a new aerial and install that before removing the dash. You'll find that behind the offside panel in the boot there will be an electrical connection and the ar*e end of your aerial cable. Plug these in and see if you get any receiption. It needs replacing anyway so seem a good place to start, its also very easy to remove this panel

it's definitely connected as i get a reception, albeit a crap one with the stem being snapped. thing is i don't want to spend £150 on a new motor and stem if all i need is the stem for about £30?

could be that the aerial just needs the power connected to it to power the motor, no?

From your posts, I deduce that 1) your aerial mast is snapped, and 2) the aerial doesn't deploy as you expect when the headunit is powered on.

I've never dealt with a snapped mast, but my guess is that it wouldn't stop the aerial from deploying.

As boneyard said, remove the offside panel in the boot. You may need to remove some other boot panels first: just look at what panel(s) overlap what. Make sure the aerial is plugged in (small white plug with 2 pins, ignore the antenna plug for now). If it's plugged in, you can test for voltages across these 2 pins. See if you get a voltage fluctuation when a mate turns the headunit on or off.

If you get a fluctuation, it's probably the aerial motor that's gone. If not, the motor isn't getting the signal to deploy the mast. In which case, get the dash off and see if the headunit is sending the "deploy aerial" signal. It's usually a blue/white striped wire coming from the back of the headunit. Test for a voltage on this wire when you turn the HU on or off (should be 12v when on, 0v when off). Depending on the wiring harness you've got, this signal may or may not reach the aerial relay unit (top-most brown box on top of the headunit cage). If, like me, you have a harness that doesn't pass this blue/white signal through, then you can connect it up to TWO wires on the aerial relay plug.

This thread gives the wires to join it to (or, possibly, get an Autoleads harness! But I'm too tight to do that!)

Hope that helps. As you can tell, I've overhauled the aerial system on my supe very recently!

Or try unplugging the power wire to the aerial, some wires to the battery, then on the pins and see if the motor works. Worked for me anyway :D
