How fragile are torque converters?

We were stripping my blown engine with it hanging from an hoist. I was underneath and undoing the torque converter bolts while my father in law was holding the TC and turning it so I could get to eack bolt.

When I undid the last bolt and the TC came loose my father in law was not ready for how heavy those things are and he dropped it onto our tarmac driveway. :banghead: I guess it fell about 2½ feet.

If I hold the TC and shake it I can hear a clunking noise. Is that normal or has the fall killed it?

Is your dad OK??
No John, he's dead. Why do you ask?

It was my father in law that dropped the TC. I didn't mention to him that he's probably cost me several hundred pounds. He was trying to be helpful and he's a nice guy so I just bit tongue as we watched the TC rolling down the driveway.

I hope you're right 'cos I've gone ahead and put the car back together. Should have it running tomorrow.

Thanks Charlie

Knowing you I'm amazed you didn't bleed to death, the amount of tongue biting that must have taken ;)
