Airflow to cool the engine. I imagine JSpec cars don't have the scoop because in Japan they were restricted to 112mph and it was deemed not necessary.

Whereas in the UK - Supes are limted to 160mph (??) .. so an airscoop to force the flow of cold air into the engine bay would help cool it.

That doesn't explain the US Spec cars not having a scoop though.

155mph limiter for the UK Spec I think mate.

That's true :conf: ... perhaps Toyota's thinking was .. they didn't want to confuse the Americans between an air scoop and letterbox. :)

I stand corrected :)

yes, but do the Americans know that?

In an earlier poll, they announced that several hundrends of thousands of Americans are convinced that they have been abducted by aliens and been experimented upon (I'm not making this up!)

I'm not sure it was there just for cooling, although it will help.

If they didn't put it on the American car because of the lower speed limits cannot be right.

You must design a car with it's top speed and performance in mind, in my opinion speed limits don't come into it at all.

I'm sure if you drove the car on some long deserted roads in Arizona you wouldn't be sticking to the speed limit and the Toyota engineers would know this.

It must be for mainly cosmetic reasons.

I cannot think of any other reason though, surely the American car would be driven just as hard.

Unless there are other differences between the UK car and the American car.

If they put the scoop on they may aswell do the full deal with the ducting aswell.

Dunno ! :innocent:

It's not cosmetic at all.

During stress-testing they found under prolonged full throttle the top of the cyl head between 3&4 (I think) was getting hotter than the rest.

The scoop sends cool air straight at that point, restoring the thermal balance.

Fair enough, but why didn't the American car get one? :)

They don't have 155mph roads and it's cheaper to produce a non vented bonnet.

I expect we have the dild...er...headlight washers...that the US spec's don't cause of legislation in a European country.

If you happened to be in America at the time, you'd know how keen they were to enforce the 55mph limit everywhere.

Troopers with radar guns were popping up from behind the bushes in the middle of nowhere! (yeee-blody-haaaa)

Don't know if it's different now, haven't been to the States for many years.
