Well according to one source (who apparently heard it from someone 'in the know') that that is what happens to our polished 'engine' bling!

 

Not unless you let mercury near it darlin'!

Paul, you're gonna hate me for this but it is possible to get rust deposits on Aluminium :(

Not from the ali itself but if any grinding is done nearby and some dust from steel has settled on it then they will rust giving the appearance that it's the ali that has the problem.

One other more likely answer is that when the 'bling' is being produced or polished a steel wire wheel is being used to smooth the surface and although you can't see it, microscopic particles of steel are left on the surface and will eventually rust !

The answer is to make sure that a stainless steel wire wheel is used.
