Read Matts thread about his supe getting stolen. Gutted for you mate.

Kind of hit home for me. Ive already got a thatcham cat 1 clifford alarm. But it still plays on my mind. Im seriously considering getting a tracker fitted. Just wondering if anyone on here has got one? If so which ones are the best?

Personally I'm in 2 minds about trackers, on the one hand it means that there's a good chance of getting your car back, but on the other, would you really want it back when some bastard has spent the night driving it like he stole it (pun intended)

Personally I reckon prevention is the best thing. I use a cat 1 alarm and a Disklok (fully covered steering wheel lock) and always remove and hide the Road Angel and TomTom Go, when I park it in the street.

Overnight it has the same security and is in a locked garage, with 3 locks, behind a locked set of gates. The keys are within 10 feet of me in the same room.

I still worry like fcuk about it but I think its the best I can do.

Some bastard stole my brother's caravan the other night. I know lots of you (us) hate them, but its still very traumatic. Its was parked up with a hitchlock and wheel clamp in the evening, and gone in the morning

So much aggro with insurance co.s etc. I really just wish I could catch some of these theives and be allowed 10 minutes alone with them.

A cheaper alternative is black jax

Even if you have the keys you need to enter a code or the car will cut out a mile down the road and wont restart.

I have this sytem on mine and i dont find it a pain at all having to enter the code, if you forget to enter it you get a gentle reminder before it cuts out.

Whats black jax then? Do you just have an old skool style keypad to entert the code on?

Black Jax is a Clifford thing... You just have a very small 'pad' with two buttons, one with a * on it, the other blank. You just enter your code by tapping the * key the appropriate number of times, then hit the blank key. Do this sequence for each number in your code (up to four digits I think).

You can also use the pad for changing various settings on the alarm, putting it in valet mode etc. It's a good system...

best tracker on the market at the moment is the RAC TRACKSTAR PLUS. your car is constantly tracked 24/7. unlike some trackers that are only activated once you report your car stolen. (£500. fitted.) similar thread in supe alarms.

The trouble with these is that they are GPS based, so if your car is in a container, in a garage or truck or whatever then they can't track it. I think the Tracker Echo that is combined radio/GPS and has a card that you have to carry when driving or it alerts the control center. It's very expensive though, about £1200 installed with lifetime membership IIRC.

I've got a GSM Alarm Monitoring System + GPS Vehicle Locating System

http://www.spy-equipment.co.uk/GSM_Alarm/gsm_alarm.html

You put a sim card in the unit so you can communicate with it via yourphone by ringing it up.

I can switch 2 circuits in the car to immobilse it if it's stolen.

I can listen in and speak if I want to, it's got a mic and speaker.

I can obtain the cars exact coordinates which I can give to the Police or I can input them on a map on the internet to locate it myself.

It monitors whether the vehicle is in motion or at rest (via ignition sense) and whether car alarm system is activated or deactivated

I had the tracker fitted at Matt H's.

When my car had to be trailered after the Turbo went, the car was about 100 yards down the road on the flatbed when Tracker called me to ask if I knew my car was moving.

I was very Impressed :D

worth every penny imho

edited to add, they even asked where it would be going, for how long & would I like them to monitor it........not bad at all

Anyone seen the i-mob system>

It does all the stuff Merckx's does, AND you can issue a HALT command to it so the next time the car comes to a standstill at a junction or whatever, the engine cuts out and won't re-start.

It can text you its' GPS co-ordinates, etc. etc. and contacts you the moment something happens to it, like if it gets run into by another car etc.

http://www.i-mob.co.uk

I'd be interested to hear from anyone with personal experience of this system.

Haven't got any personal experience, but there's several questions the website doesn't answer. How does it know your car has been taken without you driving it? It must use a PIN number or card or something, but it doesn't say. Also since it's an imobiliser it must be wired in somewhere where a professional thief would look when trying to defeat the main immobiliser, so they are likely to disable it at the same time. Which leaves it being a plain GPS based tracker. GPS normally needs line of sight with the satelites, so do they have an aerial somewhere? Surely a pro thief would just shield it, or just load it in a transporter.

IMHO, if you're looking for a tracking system, I would go for the Tracker monitor or Horizon. The Tracker Echo is based on the Horizon and uses GPS and radio transmission to track the car. Tracker has the advantage over other tracking systems as the Police have some of the tracking equipment in their cars and helicopters.

Personally, I'm not over keen on the Echo system as I'd find the proximity card irritating, but it obviously has its advantages.

As Simon said, GPS only systems are far easier to 'lose' than radio signal based systems.

There's a very strong possibility that systems where the user has control of the car and positioning information like Merckx has, will be banned/illegal soon, due to people taking the law into their own hands and going after theives themselves with emotionally driven intentions ;)

Where that leaves people that already have them, I don't know....

With regard to alarm systems, again, IMHO, I'd have, (have got) a Clifford system with dual zone proximity sensors and Blackjax. I really like the Blackjax system, but it does take a bit of getting used to.

If you like the features of the Avantguard, get the Concept 950 and Intellistart. That way, it's still a Cat 1 approved system.

Of course, if anyone wants a Tracker, Clifford, Toad or Trackstar system.... :D The phone numbers in my sig :D :innocent:

Bet it dont bring the insurance down much tho! :looney:

no it does not make a difference according to elephant i said how much does it knock and they said nothing !! i was going to get the avantguard but went for the intelliguard 950 (next one down) instead for £450 inc fitting with the option of fitting the remote control engine start later for £100. saving 350 for basically the same thing ? it has to be fitted by clifford alarm approved specialist though ?

elephant didn't even want me to copy, fax, post my alarm certificate as proof !!

had mine for 2 months and no problems whatsoever.
