View Full Version : Smokey Soop :-(
Ok, so i finally go around to fitting the hks exhaust and full decat i had sitting in my spare room. WOW the noise is awesome :read: . but the smoke isnt ! i noticed it had a few whisps of smoke now and again, espec when idling and startup, before putting the exhaust and decat on. but now, im not even willing to drive it cosve the smoke it puts out, its worst on ticking over, and slowing down in the gears. On hard acceleration there doesnt seem to be any smoke, but normal accelerating there is. Now im hoping its the valve stem seals that need doing, but maybe it could be the turbos? anyone any ideas?
I believe that valve stems mean that it smokes a few seconds on startup. If its smoking while its warm it might be turbo seals. Someone else here had exactly the same symptoms a while back (long thread about it): smoke on startup/idle but very little on boost. New set of turbos was needed.
What sort of boost are you seeing? Also whats the mileage? Its a UK car so I think less prone to this sort of problem.
Might be worth removing a few of the IC pipes to see if theres any oil in them.
Someone more technically minded will be along shortly!
Yeah its a uk spec car. its done a fair few miles, 117k ish i think. Its running 1bar boost. Turbos seem to be boosting etc fine. so if i see oil in the ic pipes its a sign of the turbos being the problem? it does smoke for a few secs on startup too. I had a similar prob about 7months ago, it went through about 2weeks of smoking pretty bad, espec when idling. And then...it stopped. To be honest i hope it is the turbos, would prob be cheaper to get them sorted than the valve stem seals
Odds on its the stem seals dude , more and more are going now
After youve got a few quotes give me a bell , i'll do em for £400 :thanks:
Dude
Do you think? that was my 1st guess too. Sounds like a good price that ;) ill be in touch :)
I don't reckon it's a stem seal problem. Knackered stem seals mainly make the car smoke on start up after it's been stood for a good few hours.
I've read about this problem before and I'm sure CW said that decatting the car means there is less back pressure to disguise worn turbo seals.
Mmmm that makes sense too, jeez, dunno what to do now  would worn turbo seals make it smoke badly on hard acceleration too tho? it doesnt seem to do that
I just did a search, Post number 12 in this (http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?p=27760) thread is the one I was thinking of but it seems CW also said the same thing just this morning. See this post 7 in this (http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?p=434222) thread.
Good luck fella, I hope it's not your turbo seals
Trust me dude stem seals are the likely ones , smoke on start up and at lights !!!! Never been wrong before :sly:

Decat = less back pressure, could be turbo oil seals.
Trust me dude stem seals are the likely ones , smoke on start up and at lights !!!! Never been wrong before I bet you'll even waive the £400 fee if it doesn't fix the problem, eh John? :D

Ill make that decision when ive seen it in the flesh but ill have a bet it Stem seals from the description  ;)

Dude :innocent:
erm... so not too sure now, to be honest im swaying towards the turbos now from what everyones said, espec that old thread by CW, thanks jake for findin that :thanks: . its smoking when normal driving too, just worst on tickover and slowing down. wouldnt i be right in saying that id have a hell of a job to get enough oil down the oil seal to make it smoke when i was driving it and engine running at quite a few thou revs??
am confused .......................... :tumble:
actually hope its the blowers now, are they easy to change?
actually hope its the blowers now, are they easy to change?
Not really dude , sorry
Dude
hope its the blowers now, are they easy to change? No, it's a horrible job. :(
oh .... :( bloody ell. so wouldnt be recommended that i attempt them myself then? and theres me thinkin itd b a few bolts and pipes

Well, that's all it is. Just that most of them are fcuking awkward to get at :(
Here's my take, FWIW: If it were stem seals, they'd also be smoking before the decat. I see no reason why the decat would aggravate them, they decay gradually over time.
My bet would be turbo seals, if they're tired they do start to smoke suddenly after backpressure has been relieved from the exhaust (pressure differential is much larger now, and oil is sucked towards the exhaust path) I've seen it happen many times , and can't see why Supras would be different.
Do Supra stock turbos have double seals?
You can pick up my stockers with EVERYTHING for £250 ok
They have less than 40K on them and no signs of smoke... Also run under 1 bar their whole life.
Dude if its the turbos you can fit my old ones to this supra right?
:woot:
Chris, the problem car is a UK spec mate. The VVTi turbo setup won't fit it. Shame though, bloody good price!
it will fit if i give him EVERYTHING! Im taking off exhaust manifold, turbos and all the turbo pipework!
:thanks:

As the person in the other thread I can confirm this - mine smoked on startup after being left for a few days before I was decatted.
However, I can also report that mine now appears to have stopped smoking anyway and has gone back to the 'puff after start up' only.

Did you do a ECU reset? Did it help or did the problem go away on its own?

Not done the ECU reset yet - the only thing I did was to clamp shut the vaccum hose for the boost gauge to stop it sucking in air.
It did smoke a bit before it was decatted, but not when driving. maybe the occasional puff of smoke when ticking over, and a second of smoke when starting it up, but nothing like it is now. smokes on mostly every type of driving. Would i be right in saying that if i bought the jap sepc blowers and manifold my uk spec decat pipe wouldnt fit no longer? :(

Correct dude , they will fit , but he will need everything
