Totally different cars, far more off the shelf stuff for the RB26 Skyline engine, and a "better" engine for performance tuning, to be honest. GTR is mega complex, a bear to work on unless you have a ramp, and electronically mind numbingly complex. A dream to drive on the road, a hugely expensive track day car. Supra is relatively simple, easy to work on (well, not compared to a RWD Escort, but relatively...), and easily tuned to a good level of performance gain. High gains, like the Skyline, soon get you into 20K UK pounds territory for mods. "Faster" is a very very open ended question, I can see this run and run. I like the RWD R33 GTS-t as a basis for tuning, it's loads lighter than the Supra, and far more simple than the 4 WD GTR.

Try both, but the Supra is a far better bet if you are on a budget and are happy with about 350 BHP max.

Talk to Neil (Skyjawa).

I think the Supra will be cheaper to get there, but for high end performance they will be similar.

Suppose it depends if you want something that will blits almost anything from a rolling start, or a track day speedy thing. (either way it's the Supra :p )

Hello, and welcome.

I can't really comment on the performance of the R33. We have an R32 GTR and that is very nice and strong (fast too  ). But, as Chris says, the engine seems a bit of a pig to work on. Also parts seem to be more expensive (you seem to need 2 of everything in most cases! :p ).

You might want to check out the insurance though. That is the the thing that sealed it for me when I was making the same decision. R33 GTR - £1600 FC, Supra 6 Speed Manual TT - £800 FC, easy choice

Either way, good luck with your choice

Cheers, J

yadda yadda ;)

TBH, theres little in it performance wise between a Stage 1 GTR ~400bhp and a BPU Supra ~400bhp. However, its far cheaper to get the supra to that level than the Skyline. There then isn't much in it cost wise to raise either to 500bhp........

Love the Supra, always will, and I think its prettier (when a front nosecone is fitted ;)), but I prefer the Skyline as a drivers tool - theres much more feedback.

Horses for courses, said it before and I'll say it again, both superb cars, but both superb at different things - depends what you want from a car, drive both and make your own mind up :)

You'd be surprised - theres a lot more Supra's than GTR's about. However there are about equal numbers of both I reckon if you count Skylines in general (ie GTS, GTST, GTT etc).

rains a lot up there in Scotland doesn't it ?!? - the rear wheel drive Supra can be a bit of a nightmare, where as the 4x4 Skyline might be better for traction.

i LOVE driving my Supra in the dry sunny days but winter can be a pain in the backside. But if you like that kind of thing then thats another + for the supra.

Also you can get RLTC if it gets too bad.

Get a Skyline, there are enough scottish Supra owners for my liking as it is ;)

I think you'd honestly like as much as the other as Skyjawa (Neil) says.. as long as you get the GTR Skyline R33/R34. The Supra is more reliable/stronger for mods, depends what you want to do with it really.

I've always wondered if I would be better off with a 4 wheel drive car up here in Scotland. Then I get in the Supra and quickly come back to reality!

RLTC really tames the Supra in the wet and makes it so much easier and less stressful to drive.

You're best off test driving both cars. I really regret not test driving a GTR when i bought my Supra. I wouldn't have bought one, but I should have compared them first.

Bit of a hijack I'm afraid, but are body panels easy enough to get hold of for the GTR ? Are they overly pricey ? Are they more expensive than the Supe to maintain ?

Just wondered ;)

Matt

No idea mate, never had any call to find out. But sourcing them through most Nissan garages or Middlehurst is straightforward enough. Plus theres plenty of parts from breakers about these days :)

Hi all.

Am a virgin to this forum so go easy on me :D

Must admit, I have owned a skyline for the past 5 years and have never really

taken a second look at the supra. But the more I see them, the more it's growing

on me and hence coming onto this forum.

I wonder what it takes to get a supra to 600 + bhp. It'll probably feel more powerful

than a 600 bhp skyline.

Wouldn't it be nice if I can have one of each :)

I can't compare the driving experience to that of a skyline, but same as the liner, getting a Supra to the 600bhp range is going to be pricey!

You can get a Jap Supra to 400bhp with relative ease, just get a decent car, decat and a couple of associated mods and voila, for less than £1k you have a genuine 400fwhp. If you buy a UK it'll cost a bit more as you'll need a boost controller but you'll see similar figures as the jap car.

I've seen a car run 470fwhp this weekend on stock turbos, but 500bhp to 600 bhp means you're looking at a single turbo upgrade.

The following is based on info from this forum so may be subject to correction:

Single turbo means new ECU, injectors, turbo, manifold, wastegate, boost controller, intake, exhaust, clutch/TC, plus lots of mapping time! Stock internals and head/intake manifold should be okay.

If your going from a stock car then thats probably around £6k if you do a lot of the work yourself.

Contact Terry Saunders at Vortex for more info.

Bigger power than that means a built engine which is BIG money.

Depends if your talking 600 flywheel or 600 hubs. 600 fly aint that expensive on the Supra in all fareness is it? (bearing in mind you obviously have enough coin to buy, run and insure the thing in the first place)

I agree mate.

600 hubs is going to be useless as a road car. Anyone thats serious about aiming for that sort of GENUINE hp isn't going to be interested in using their car on the street!

I have owned both of these, an RZ Supra, and a GTR R33 Skyline, both were around 400bhp.

The skyline was the more "sure footed" car by a mile, felt like it was glued to the road wheras the supra was very skittish on corners etc.....but that comes with 4wd -v- rwd.

The skyline costs MEGA money to run and maintain, and the Supra is more of a more affordable car compared to the GTR Sadly.

If i had a choice of both cars back.........i would have my GTR, but i was offered a 600bhp Supra built by Garage Border in Japan two months ago for SILLY CHEAP money and declined stupidly. Having seen the car after its arrival in the uk however, i would have had this Supra over my GTR anyday. It was fantastically modified and looked superb.

Its all down to personal preference.........drive both and see what u think............they are nerly impossible to compare as they are so different.

:)
