View Full Version : Volks on a TRD Widebody

Dusty,

Dont suppose you have any customers who have this combination over there? Could you get any pictures? Ideally I woud like some CE28N's to go with a TRD widebody kit, but I think the CE28 only comes in up to 10.5" width. This project is some way off yet, as I have just bought a house, which needs a lot of work doing (including a garage/workshop :eyebrows: )

Wouldn't look very good...

You need 18x10 front and 18x12 rear. I have seen as large as 19x10 front & 19x13 rear with 345 tires. An 18x10.5 certainly wouldn't fill it up proper...

thats what I thought... what about a low offset wheel on the rear? Or.. perhaps having the rim widened?

which wheels commonly get used for a widebody then? I see what looks like Blitz z-01's a lot

You could do a really low offset to help fill up the outer gap. Still wouldn't look very good from the rear though.

You could have it widened but if done improperly it will kill the integrity of the wheel.

Blitz makes nothing wider than 10".

Volk used to make up to 13" but they discontinued everything wider than 11" about a year ago due to low sales.

The 3 brands I offer that can get as wide as you need are Veilside (Andrew Racing), HRE, and Fikse.

Image Wheels will make you anything you want from billet stock... www.imagewheels.co.uk

Obviously it'd cost you though, but if you are going for 19*13 with 345 tyres on you must have the disposable income of a sheik :)

Having got trd wbk on my car i dont think you need to go to 12" or 13" wide on the rear, im useing 19x10 frnt and 19x11.5 rear, in fact i think 19x11 on the rear would also look fine.

Supragal
05-04-05, 10:52
what size tyres are you running?

Dnk
05-04-05, 14:38
Hi
Im useing pirelli p zero's and there 255x35x19 front and 295x30x19 rear, those size rims really fill the arches just about right, if anythink i could have had 11" wide rears which wouldnt have sat quite so flush with the rear wings, looks fine from behind too, just a bit of tram lining down poor quality rds but when you find a nice bit the car drives superbly.

V8 Killer
05-04-05, 17:00
Why fit 295's when you could fit 345's? You could have 275's on the front. Imagine the traction and handling...

If I was going to go widebody I would fill up the gap with as big a tire as I good. To me that's half the reason to go widebody.

Just my 2 cents...

Dusty

Hi Dusty
Yep i agree you can fit much bigger width rims and tyres than im useing but was just pointing out as an option that you dont need to and it will still look great and save a lot of £££'s in being able to use narrower tyres on the narrower rims.
Rubber here is very expensive my rears are approx £250 each so god knows how much a 345x30x19 tyre would be. (i'll find out)

Also knowing how close my tyres are to catching and rubbing in certain places then imo going even wider has got to cause some probs.
I dont have any traction issues at all in the dry, only in the wet do i have any probs with traction and to be honest the handling isnt getting better as the car now tramlines far more than it did before on our loverly rds, on track yep there would be no issues but as road use your def making the car worse.
Have attached pik of the side of my car

If the wheel offset is correct, you could get much larger rubber in there. TBH I assume Dusty is talking about more powerful supras, and I have very sticky 295's rear and dry traction is still an issue with a baby single, so 345's would help greatly. I hear what you are saying about tramlining, it is just a trade of for more grip IMO. I really depends if the car is for show or go I suppose.

BTW I run 265/35/18 front & 295/35/18 rear on a stock bodied car.

Dnk
06-04-05, 09:49
I agree if your cars got shed loads of hp then more rubber the better, mines got a max of i guess around 420 ish so big hp isnt an issue for me and never will be as im v happy with that.
My rims have the correct offsets and fill the arch's perfectly but you could go wider ie towards the shocks, but having looked very closely at what gaps ive got then think going much bigger will def cause probs.
My fronts now just very lightly rub on full lock and my rears are flush with the wings so you cant go wider apart from inwardly as ive said to the shocks and if i was to add another 1.5" to the rear then it would be very close indeed.
I'll have to jack the back of my car up and take some measurements and pickies.
Regards
Dnk

FYI I have put an 11.5 on a stock bodied car at the rear before with rolled arches, so a 13 so be pretty easy on a wide body., assuming it increases the car width by at least 1.5" either side ??

Oooo, just looking at that "image wheels" site and got a bit moist for these

06-04-05, 15:27
Just one thing..... if you have a narrower tire, your effective track increases as it is measured from the middle of the tyre on one side to the middle of the tyre on the other. I know Lotus put narrower tyres on the second generation Elise because they wanted to widen the track - and last time I checked they knew a lot about handling...

terawua
06-04-05, 15:29
Dnk... pictures would be appreciated.... I guess a rear view of a TRD widebody would help to see if it does look like it is running on matchsticks with narrow tyres, or whether it looks acceptable. Personally I think the Supe on 9.5" standard wheels look very leath from the rear.

terawua
06-04-05, 15:32
sorry.. for leath read meaty :sly:

I'll post what ive got but next week my car will be on a 2 post ramp at my old race team shop where i'll do some pickies and measure up some clearances that are on my car.
They def dont look like silly narrow wheels and tyres to me but heres a couple to help but i'll take a few to give you better idea and from underneath.

terawua
06-04-05, 16:15
yeah, they look fine. nice bodykit as well - very jealous! what rear width are they again? 11" or 10.5" ?

V8 Killer
06-04-05, 16:31
The TRD Widebody adds right at 50mm to the rear. I don't have a precise number but with the correct offset of wheel you can definitely fit a wide tire, I have personally been involved with 2 Supras that have 345's.

I was referring to bigger HP Supras, as Terry said, that need the traction. On a BPU Supra I agree that 345's are overkill. On a single turbo all bets are off, traction becomes something you always crave more of.

Tires are a bit spendy, I assume if its your daily driver you wouldn't want to pay out of a 345 eh? But then again if its your daily driver and its a TRD Widebody you probably don't work for minimum wage either.

I don't know much about Lotus, we have very few of them here. Think I've seen about 5 in my life. I do know that every road-course event I have ever been to people are talking about how they want wider wheels or bragging about how they already have wider wheels. My personal experience on the course tells me the same thing. If more narrow wheels were the best for handling wouldn't Ferrari put 185's on their track-edition 360 Modena? I mean after all it is built totally for track, not for street use or legality.

Regards,

Dusty

terawua
06-04-05, 17:01
hmm. I think lotus and ferrari must have come at the problem from two separate sides. I suppose the Lotus has only 150-190bhp, a lot would be wasted through rolling resistance on wide tyres, and also the weight issuse was paramount with that car. As for the Lotus being rare in the US, yes it is... but soon it will be there with a Toyota powerplant (and a few extra lbs for all those US market must haves like a/c). In the meantime, check out Symbolic Motor Company in La Jolla, Ca....

It seems this thread has stirred up a little interest.. can you post prices of the HRE and Fikse wheels along with their respective sizes?

V8 Killer
08-04-05, 00:58
HRE and Fikse both have a ton of options and a lot of models to choose from. The easiest thing to do is go to their websites and choose what you want. It is impossible for me to list them all, I'd be here all night.

www.hrewheels.com
www.fikse.com

If someone lists a very specific wheel and option I am happy to provide a quote. That would give someone a rough idea the general cost of them.

Thanks,

Dusty

If you have a TRD Widebody you should have Veilside Evo V in 18x10 and 18x12. They don't cost that much more than the 18x9 and 18x10. They fill up your underneath and allow a nice tire.

18x9 and 18x10 in Chrome will cost you $3852
18x10 and 18x12 in Chrome will cost you $4068

Shipping would be about $400, probably a little more, but less than $500.

sounds good, but what about tramlining? would it be a problem with 10" fronts???

and looking at the nemesis website the 18" veilside evo 5's come in all sorts of offsets, any idea which would be best???

With the tramlining, the wider the tyre, the more the car will follow the contour of the road.

Wow, I love those wheels on that car and a very rare photo by all accounts as they seem to be a very underused and underappreciated wheel for the supra..... so nice looking makes me want them even more, but I have to sort the house out first!

One thing, is it just the rears that would need rolling wiht 9.5 front and 10.5 rear, or both arches?

You may or may not have to roll the arches on the front. Depends on what tire you want to fit. The 9.5 on a smaller tire fits without rolling. But if you want to fit the max tire you will need to roll.
