disappointment again :(

well, after last week's terrible visit to Keighley Trade Centre (yes i now know of their reputation since joining here!!) this week i took a drive to Discount Car Centre in Manchester who had about 5 TTs in

the one that did seem to be the best of the bunch was Toyota kitted, big 18 split rims, turbo timer (sat unwired in the boot) and not bad stereo

however, for the £13k asking price you also got an odd concave in the front splitter, bits of the interior not clipped in properly, a missing drivers side wind deflector (but the remains of the sticky stuff to hold it in place were still there) a rear high level spoiler (the one that attaches above the top of the rear screen) again in the boot but the remains of the sticky stuff still on the car and upon close inspection, one of those screw on exhaust tailpipes covering the standard one

i just want to turn up somewhere and see something that makes me feel like i can't leave without it!! i must just be going to the wrong places!

i'm already in talks with Jurgen about an import and thinking about a drive up to Vine Place for a look

Whifbitz is a bit too far for a journey just for a look, but they seem to have a couple of nice looking motors there at the moment

the minters do exist don't they, as in ones for sale, the only one i've seen in the flesh recently is gaz's but of the 15 i must have now looked at, on supposedly import specialist forecourts, i'm lucky if they're clean ffs!!!

sorry bout the rant,

wes

dealers seem to take the pish with TT prices - 13k is a laughing stock for a car like the one you've described. Many Arthur Daley's see Supras and think 'hmmmmmmmmm that'll attract the twenty something idiots with mullets and more cash than sense, i'll just bump the price up 5k and they're bound to buy it' :(

10k tops I'd say for a pre 1995 Supe, unless it was low low miles and super mint

Sorry to hear you didnt have any luck Wes. Did they let you take one for a spin or did they stick to their "you'll have to leave a deposit" stance? Hopefully youll have some better luck soon mate.

well, i was getting a bit tired of his typical forecourt talk with someone who had 'phoned him last night to say they were coming back for it on Monday' and so when i asked him to go get the keys to at least fire it up he was gone for ages so i got back in my car and was jsut about to pull away when he came out waving the keys at me talking about where his trade plates were

i just said to him straight, for that price i could list plenty of things wrong with it when i could get a TT aero for less with the same miles (allbeit a couple of years older) or a mint TT with half the mileage & newer for almost £3k less!! he then changed his attitude to say go and look at all the other shite around and then come back. i don't think so :music:

thanks to all others for the recommendations, i've just got to be patient, not something i'm good at

This place is ace. I bought mine from here 1 year ago, totally pleased with it.

Aftersales service is excellent too.

Chris

yeah they do have some nice ones there but seem quite expensive for what they are. for the same price i could be looking at a lot more for my money through a custom import

:swear: i hate wanting something this much!!! :swear:

I read this post and unfortunately there are alot of bad examples out there. Here are some tips you should bear in mind when looking at the Supra:

1) Ask the grade - 3 is average (but not accidented!) - 3.5 (ok) - 4 (good...only really on newer models) - 5 (forecourt!)...all traders know the grade...if they say they don't know, assume R (accidented and possible chassis damage), RA (accidented but well repaired), or 3.

2) Unscrew the oil cap and check for cream deposits on the inside of the cap and around the tank opening...too much cream suggests engine has seen better days from v high miles, bad oil, lots of hard acceleration...if it's too clean it suggests it has been flushed, oil recently changed (could be ok), or they are hiding something.

3) Listen for the turbos - these are expensive to fix...if they whistle too much there is a problem...make sure you are comfortably hearing the first one kick off at 1500rpm and the other at 5500rpm...also check there isn't a massive cloud of white smoke bellowing from the exhaust when the turbo is called into play.

4) Check the inner edge of the front wheels to ensure that they haven't worn disproportionately to the rest of the tyre - this suggests wrong tyre pressure or the the wheel alignment is off...may have been kerbed or have a damaged chassis.

5) On the test drive, have the driver take their hands off the wheel on a straight flat road and...a) accelerate gently b) brake gently...if the chassis, brake wear, and wheel alignment is good...it should perform this task in an almost perfect straight line!

6) Get to a car park and have the driver engage full lock (left and right) and drive in a circle...listen for nasty clunking.

7) Check all around the car for prangs and dents - open the boot and check for new rubber mats for example...look for bodywork misalignments, look under the bodykit to check the situation on rust as water collects massively on poorly fitted kits.

General advice:

1) Don't be worried about a high mileage car - my workhorse is a 1993 Cavalier and it is still purring nicely at 160,000 miles...we are in the modern era people...car engines don't give out these days.

2) Always always always walk away from an apparent bargain - the seller's job is to make you feel terrible and that you won't find a better example again. Go away and think about it for 24 hours or so. If I had bought on the moment, I would currently own a 94 UK Supra which had been to the moon and back for 9.5k (much less than this nowadays).

3) Highly modded cars have probably been stressed. Even on low modded cars, if the ECU hasn't been updated (or fitted)...the pistons inside could be undergoing detonation and flinging bits of metal around inside...all invisible to the eye.

4) The seller should have all the minor scratches and missing items replaced before sale.

They do exist in the forecourts and with private sellers - but you get what you pay for!

Hope this helps...

Sorry Chris but you must ahve been a lucky one....Vine Place is just one rung higher up the sales ladder than Keighley. Theyre "back yard" is a graveyard to Japanese imports. Quick shammy, a set of cheap blingy wheels and onto the forecourt. I must admit they have come along way in the past 2 years or so, but I still wouldnt touch them with a barge pole. Having said all that, if you have personnally had a good service off them then thats what counts. I live 10 minuets away from them, so know a lot of people who've bought there and wernt as lucky as you.

I sort of agree with this but there are still some dealers that think the average supra is worth £13K as seen here. There are some nice cars about for good prices. Good luck with your search.

I'm another one who thinks these people are way over priced for their cars. A mate of mine bought a 1995 white N/A manual about 6 months ago for the asking price of £10,000 :looney:

I saw the car a month or two before he bought it too, they slapped some wheels on and tidied up the interior a bit before he saw it.

Yeah but if I was selling...I would be laughing all the way to the bank cos that's what I'd be in business to do at the end of the day. The good Supras and the well priced ones do not hang around on Autotrader for long...they come and go in a week!

£10,000 should get a Twin Turbo 95 or a nice modded 94/95!
