View Full Version : life span of a stock clutch with 400bhp?
How long would you expect a stock clutch to last for with around 400bhp at the engine?
I've just brought my Supra back on the road after it's winter nap and noticed the clutch is slipping a bit when on full throttle.
I noticed it would slip every now and again last year but on the whole it would bite 99 times out of 100.
But it seems to be slipping nearly all the time (but not by a big amount) when on full power in 4th, 5th and 6th.
The next question is : if I need a new one which would be best for around 400bhp and how much are they?

speak to Terry S - I seem to remember him posting on here a week or so back that stock clutch with an rps pressure plate is v. good
Clutch life is down to the driver as much as the engine. But a stocker can handle more than 400hp for some time...
It also depends what sort of driving you are doing, cruising all day on a motorway or changing gear a lot driving around city centres. I had a stock clutch last only 10K km here in HK running around 400bhp. So switched to TRD one but even this only lasts around 25K km here.
Well I do drive the car fairly hard most of the time.... it's what I bought it for really.
I had a brand new toyota stock clutch fitted a couple of years back and I've done something like 15,000miles on it running at around 400bhp.
My driving technique means I'm always heel and toe braking which requires throttle blip on down change and therefore the clutch application time should be less than normal.
I live in the countryside and town driving shouldn't be as high as a city dweller.
So it looks like I'll be needing to buy a new clutch, but whether to buy an uprated one or a stock one wich a bigger pressure plate as previously mentioned in this thread.
Cheers,

Is it quite obvious when a clutch is on the way out? Does it slip for long before it goes usually or can they just bust?
slipping is usually the first sign of the clutch about to die........
to preserve it a bit longer, turn your boost down and dont do any full on drag launches
Try an RSP sport street clutch. I have one sitting in my loft which I havnt bothered to fit yet (with flywheel) as Im waiting for my stock one to die first.

The first signs you will notice are if you are in a higher gear (4th/5th/6th) and you accelarate from a lowish speed. This puts the most load through the clutch, so if the clutch is on it's way out the revs of the engine will rise at a greater rate to the car accelaration.
My experience is that once you first notice the clutch start to slip then you have about 2 weeks left, over this period it will start to slip more and more, eventually in every gear.
