View Full Version : J spec.No cats. No ring. Boost controller
from what i have heard from this forum is that a boost controller can not cure the problem of removing both cats on J spec and no restrictor ring inplace and to run safe boost i.e 1.1bar or so, reason being "boost controller cannot lower boost can only increas"
I have a friend with a J spec 94 TT Manual who is a mechanic, he has removed both his cats on his supe and has put in an apexi avcr boost controller to controll the boost, his car maxes boost at 1.15bar boost thats what it set at! i have seen this, there is no restrictor ring, he can set the boost even lower.
This is new to me, but it just shows boost controllers can lower boost as well respectively!

It's news to me, any1 in the know bout AVCRs care to comment?
My E-01 boost controllers winging it's way to me in the post as we speak, YEAH!!!
Might be nice if i can junk restrictor ring when it arrives, i've been told that in the past that can't lower boost and it seemed to make sense at the time why they couldn't, guess it could just depend on the controller and how sophisticated the solonoid control is.
I am sorry to shatter your theories guys but boost controllers cannot lower boost only increase it.
Your friend may have it set to up the boost to 1.15 bar and the lower reading is what he gets when he does not up it (although that seems low for a J-spec with no cats etc) but i can assure you his controller definitely cannot lower it.
Not all J-Specs will boost high if you remove both cats, it really depends on the exhaust that is fitted and how restrictive it is. For example my car has both cats removed and ARC exhaust fitted with no restrictor ring. Without the boost gauge I only get 1bar.
As has been said already, a boost controller is only able to raise boost.

Well done guy's, quite funny actually as i said, i was always under the impression you could only increase boost with an Electronic Boost Controller, and it makes sense to me why.
WKDtime seemed adament of his claim, so thought i was about to be corrected again, and as i've no exprience of the AVCR, my knowlege of these was based purely on word of mouth and first hand knowlege of only a few Controllers, i was just trying to get my head this, missed the obvious a restrictive exhaust genius!

Hows the head coming along CJ?
OK this restrictor ring thing is doing my head in. Maybe im a million miles out here but you use the rings to limit boost because the J spec waste gates are not up to the job when both cats are removed ? Well thats the idea i got anyway.... if a waste gate is controlled by an actuator is it not a better and safer modification to fit uprated spec actuators and springs to keep those gates from cycleing too far open (hence the need for the restrictor rings) Sorry, it probably because i'm not 100% sure of the problem..... When i have known restrictors to be fitted before it is just a cheap way of not doing a job correctly. Please enlighten me as im not a T*ss*r, just someone that may not fully get the idea of why everyone is going for the restrictor ring option :zen:

Should be back early next week. I am sure Jagman will post up the pics when it does
