Just a post to introduce myself and say Hi - and to ask a few questions.

I don't own a Supra just yet but this is something I plan to rectify in the next couple of weeks.

Obviously I would like a UK TT 6 speed but these are damn rare and when you do find one it's expensive! :) My budget if buying one of these would be £9000 (£7k plus my gen6 '94 Celica GT) but insurance is a big factor. The missus will be driving the car as I have a company van and as she's only 22 insurance is expensive. Because of her age this definitely rules out the J Spec TT. I have however, managed to get a quote for £1400 TPFT on a manual N/A which is good for me. No TT but they look just as good!

In regards to the N/A, I have a few questions I was hoping you guys (and gals) could answer:

I've read the very informative buying guide in the FAQ section but this is geared more towards the TT. Is there anything I should be looking out for mechanically wise on the N/A when buying one?

Price, how much should I be looking to pay for a manual N/A? There's a couple on this weeks Autotrader, a black '96 N reg for £5495 and a red '96 P reg for £5995. Are these too cheap? AT link (You may need to be registered with Autotrader to view link)

The facelift model, when did this come out and what's the difference?

MPG? As she'll be using it the most I've promised the missus she'll get 70 miles to a tenner (27mpg-ish) Is this realistic?

Insurance, are there any insurerers that specialise in grey imports? Bare in mind the missus is only 22 (I'm 25 though but have one claim and SP20/4pts) The policy will be in my name, I have 3yrs NCB.

Owners Clubs? Do you guys run one on here?

And most importantly, Performance & Stats. Does anyone have any links to these figures? I'd like to know the 0-60mph for the N/A and its dimensions (will it fit in me garage?)

I think that's about it, sorry for so many questions but I suppose this is the best place to ask! :thanks:

Hiya!

MPG on the NA is not much better than the TT - you'll be doing well to get 27 MPG unless you drive like a saint the whole time, in which case your missing all the fun of the Supra! I get 18 MPG out of my NA and I know a fair few NA owners get around that mark too

Insurance - NA's are probably the most expensive Supe to insure, yes more than the TT (Jap or Uk)

I haven't had too many quotes so far but I know my insurerers (Tesco) wont touch me on any version - UK/Jap. I've had a quote from http://www.quotelinedirect.co.uk on both the UK TT and the N/A. The TT was cheaper (£1096 TPFT & £1985 FC) and as expected the N/A was more (£1400 TPFT). Although cheaper insurance wise the UK TT is far more expensive to buy so this out weighs the cost of insurance. I didn't bother quoting on the J spec TT.

hmm, its possible they don't. I'm sure I've heard someone mention that they don't.

By the way the facelifts started coming out in 97.

Cheers mate, BTW - how do you put your own pic on an avatar? I can't find the option in Edit Avatar. I use the same format of discussion forum on another site and the option is on there but not on this.

Hi and welcome conalex  I've got an n/a myself and i'm insured with Tesco but i'm a little older then you @ 26.

I'd try privilege they gave me a good quote for fully comp might be worth a try ?

Good luck:)

Cheers bud, I'm with Tesco myself on my Celica but they wont insure me on a Supra because of the missus. I could get insured on my own but that's not an option - unless I just dumped her and kicked her out! ;)

Hey, that's an idea! I could get a TT then. :)

Anyone know the difference in performance between a manual and auto N/A?

I swore I'd never have an auto after having one on an FTO and after test driving an auto 300zx, but they're well cheaper than the manuals!! Like a grand cheaper!

Also, sorry to be a pain but as I mentioned on my first post - any pointers or tips when buying the N/A? I'm looking at a couple tomorrow and was wondering if there's anything in particular I should be looking out for!

Cheers

Hi mate,

I went through all this when I was buying, so... things to look out for:

http://www.mkivsupra.co.uk/FAQ/New%20Buyer%20FAQ.htm#Are%20there%20any%20common%20faults%20on%20the%20MKIV%20Supra?

Basically, for an NA, the clear plastic headlamp covers can go yellow after several years. There's also the infamous Sqeaky Boot Rubbers.

Dimensions:

http://www.j-garage.com/toyota/supra/spec80.html

Good luck. BTW, I get between 23 and 24 MPG from my NA manual. The auto box on supras is reckoned to be very good.

Cheers Stevie, just what I was looking for!! Much appreciated. :thanks:

Bobbeh, as much as I'd love a TT 6 speed my insurance (with the missus on the policy) is just too much. Plus the missus is already moaning about how much fuel she'd be using (she'll use it for work) and the fact that we're borrowing money to finance the car. But hey, that's a womens prerogative ;) :)

I've come to the conclusion that although no where near as quick as the TT, at least the N/A looks just as good! :)

I think you'll find the insurance on a UKTT is no more than an NA JDM car.

Yeah I know, unfotunately a UK TT is a lot more expensive than an N/A. Therefore I can't raelly insure the car for £5000/TPFT which is what I wanted to do!

Although, since being on here last I gave Sky a call and they will insure me on a either Uk/Jap TT for £1355 TPFT. They'll also do me the N/A for £1190 TPFT.

Total result, because of this I'll probably get a Jap TT - cus they're cheapest and I'll insure it TPFT. I'll have to look into how much I can get a manual for, hopefully they're not too dear! :woot:

Cobblers, for the last 3 years since looking into Supes I have been able to save a minimum of £200 on the UK ( last year it was £600 difference)
