BPU and FMIC?

Hi All

I know there's some cnfusion over full BPU and an intercooler, is there ANY gain over adding a FMIC when you are staying within the standard TT BPU max (which as we know cant go above 450hp). I have ordered almost everything now from various outlets (so much cheaper than buying it together!) and am down to the BC which has a gain and whether or not to get a FMIC or perhaps put a new standard SMIC on? What size (core etc) is the standard IC on a TT just for comparison?

I dont mind fitting it if there is a good reason and I'm tempted anyway to give me new piping and a new IC in general but if it offers a performance ceiling the same as a SMIC this would be much easier to fit of course

A good condition smic is more than enough for BPU and a can support a fair bit more, think a few

members have run well over 500 hp with them

So how do I test the condition of mine, any ideas? it looks solid enough but thats no real indicator

FMIC looks better. For BPU it isn't really a necessity though. how long have you had the car as you may be able to find some receipts that suggest that the previous owner had put an uprated one in, which was the case with my car.

Poke the fins on the intercooler if they crumble to dust then you need a new one.

I'd avoid an FMIC where you can. You have to remove or butcher parts to make them fit. You can get an SMIC from Chis Wilson that can handle up to approx 600 bhp. Garage Whifbitz also offer a mid range aluminium SMIC.

Thus unless needing to exceed 600 bhp I can see no need to change to an FMIC, other than for aesthetics.

Here is my 2pennys worth the type r hks front mount made massive difference over the original no more heat soak and could boost all day long at 1.2bar. Downside you have to loose the active spoiler mechanics, which didn bother me as your saving weight also.

The stock bumper is designed for air flow to a SMIC so if you have a stock bumper you'd likely feel no benefit from a FMIC and probably have to make ducting mods to fit it. The GW SMIC is larger than stock and uses the same mounts, an easy upgrade and good for a lot more HP than you are looking at.

If yours is the cars original smic it'll be on its last legs and if you touch the fins they will more than likely crumble to dust

No gain from BPU with a larger intercooler or pipework, the std if in reasonable condition will run up to around 500-550bhp no problem, I ran a single turbo setup for a while on the std unit at 500BHP.

I would recommend keeping the SMIC for BPU or even small singles but it will probably need changing. My car is a facelift 98 and the fins were shot so I would imagine most intercoolers are past their best now.

CW sells good quality aftermarket and mine was from america and all the right mountings for a direct fit.

Also what size is the pipe work on a normal one just so i can look for one that goes straight in?

Just to explain I am not at home near my Supra so cant measure it but have time to look into ordering one now

Pretty sure the SMIC pipework is 2.5" in diameter. I suppose the FMIC pipework size will depend on what kit you buy. I have the SRD kit and I think it was 2.5 all round apart from the joints on the inter cooler itself and when it joins up to the inlet manifold. which is 3"

Unless you're intending to go single turbo and pushing 700bhp + there is no advantage in larger pipework, std is quite adequate, don't forget that due to boost pressure the pipework is not restricted to the flow limitations of N/A breathing.

How much cheaper? I haven't looked in a while but I think the whifbitz ones are £360 or something. Should just be a straight swap with your old one.

For a guide the OE SMIC was around £1k some years ago so the GW & CW versions are a bargain

Intercooler assembly is listed at 1600 euro on Toyodiy now

This place has one that doesn't look in bad condition and its cheap but

I bought the Whifbitz uprated SMIC when I went BPU last summer

Yes I agree cheaper isnt better absolutely but when you can get the full kit in stainless for less than half of the price of the other outlets it makes you think. A Toyota one would be about £1200 with duties so yes the non standards are a bargain. Not trying to cheap out but if they have the same power as one for half the price it just allows me to spend the money elsewhere on the car. At the moment though I am most taken with the whifbitz one which is curently £420. AC93 did you renew all the pipework as well as the WB one doesnt seem to come with any unlike others?
