I am about to purchase a 93 RZ TT Auto Import Black that is tastefully modified (cams, exhaust, water injection) to around 450 BHP, has 90k miles, good solid body, resprayed about 4 years ago, only needs some TLC and a tune up to bring it back to life.

Whats it worth?

So ive finally been able to inspect the car (see pictures below). Its a tail of two halves. The car is solid but needs a good bit of TLC. Theres no rot anywhere. Its got new radiator, new brake lines. Race cams, water/methanol injection system, HKS full stainless exhaust with cat pipes. Interior is clean with original mats, only the stereo head unit has been upgraded.

So now the bad bits - There are 4 areas on the body that have started to rust. Both corner under the boot window and two 50p spots above the passanger door on the roof line. The original bonnet is with it and i will refit this but it needs to be resprayed first as its quite scratched. I really dont like the front bumper and side skirts so i will replace them (maybe not straight away) with something more suttle. The tyres have cracked and wheels are tatty so new wheels and tires are needed (will go for 18's). One of the rear lights has moisture inside it? Headlights have been cleaned and laquored.

On the engine side, the engine bay is sollid but lots of surface rust on the engine and shock tower tops ect, no rot or deep rust just needs a very good make over. The car has been stood a long time so will get the belts changed and liquids renewed (maybe get an engine flush). Lastly theres a new Aircon exchanger needs fitting though, Old one was removed. Lots of paperwork, al lreciepts for parts and work and MOT's.

After all this the car then needs a very very good clean up and some of the seals on windows etc look a bit tired so may need new or may come back with some rubber restorer.

What do you think for £6K

6k sounds tempting but in the long run it may be more economical to buy one that is actually more road worthy as these cars can be money pits, just add up say a full respray a front bumper (if an Oem one is required these are around £300 used) the boot lid is rusty again very rare to obtain rust free ones that goes for the std. bonnets too. I cannot comment on the modifications but cams seem a strange mod if only running 450hp and water injection!

Thanks for the feedback, would your opinions be the same if i mention it being my best friends fathers car which hes had for 17 years? He has given me a full run down of the car and wil lalso MOT it for me. I had a look underneath and the floor is solid. He says there are no items to replace as he had the brake pipes and radiator done and everthing else is good. He has told me that when he last moved it, it misfired a little so he is now having the plug clips (the platic tops to the plugs) replaced as they had perished. I really want one and thi sseamed a good oportunity in my price raneg but i have no experience at al lof these cars hence the caution. Also ive found a few places that do aftermarket front bumpers that are suttle but nice.

As mentioned it will cost double of not triple what you are paying imho. I also highly doubt it is running the power that is claimed with what has been mentioned.

Have you inspected under the car? If you can get under it for a proper look and check everything. The boot lid is a common issue now and as also mentioned a nightmare to try and find a replacement that isn’t the same!

Thanks for the honest thoughts guys. I had planned to put an extra 4k into it over winter and another 2k to 4k over the next year to 2 years, hoping that would be enough to get it to a very good level. I dont mind doing that but im now wondering if 6k is to high to start with or if i should just walk and look at something a little newer like an Subaru, evo, type R etc. It really is a head and heart moment.

So long as you are aware it will be a project and you will dump at least 3 times the price back into it eventually, then yeah go for it at 6k

Yeah that. I started off with a cheap car with bust engine and have spent well into 5 figures and lots of time on top since I bought it rebuilding it and getting it professionally mapped etc (single setup). Having said that the bodywork was mint and underbody etc as the car only has 60k miles and has been in Japan for lots of that. So that saved me a lot.

I would get a full inspection done by a competent supra garage before putting anything into that. It could be a total moneypit. Any engine bay pictures?

I am always suspect about 'barn find' type cars and apart from a very rare occasion they are usually moneypits. Cars stood outside long term is a bad thing if never used, rubber hoses perish, It e doesn't do old wiring any good, not to mention corrosion which is like metal cancer, hard to get rid of.

So i have finally decided. I will offer £4k for the car and maybe woul dgo to £4.5 but if the response is no then i will give up on my supra dream as i cant afford one that is in very good condition. What i have seen instead that would blow all my cash but hopefully be sound is a Porche 996 S2 Cabriolet. Probably not too popular here i guess!!

If you don’t end up buying it would you be kind enough to pass me the details as I would be interested.

As for a 996 I sold mine at the start of the year and really miss it. It truly was an awesome car, practical, reliable, fast and surprisingly good on fuel. I used mine as a daily and it never let me down. Only reason I sold it is due to our little one coming along and needing to buy a new family car. Will definitely buy another 911 in the near future. If you do decide to go for a 911 make sure you have a proper inspection carried out by a specialist as they can have a lot of hidden faults. I looked at over 15 private cars before I found mine.

Yeah its a private sale, the guy has owned it for 17 years and as had it off road stashed either on a drive (outside for a couple of years) or mostly in a wharehouse. He put lots of cash into it between 1999 and 2005 but then lost interest or time? He has loads of parts and a box full of reciepts.

I checked the floor under the car and gave it a good bang everywhere, seemed solid and im told they very rarely rot. Im more concerned about all the hoses/plastics/electrics etc with it being stood so long and alos al the brake discs look in a very poor state, may wear off but i think they are pitted. The most worrying aspect is he may not have use dit much but when he did he had both cats out with cat pipes in, no reducing ring in the exhaust, no boost controller and it has no boost gauge - so im worried it may have been over boosting for some time? I really want th ecar and happy to restore it but i have an initial budget of £10k to get it perfect (ish) so all the above work plus requiring the bodywork repairs and a full blow over and then the recommended engne work to change the belts and replace the AC exchanger i fear ill need another £3-£5k sooner than id be able to afford?

BTW - Ive decided not to look at 996 seen as im told most of the engines are ticking time bombs, maybe a low mileage S2000 ?? But i know none make me feal like a supra does.
