puggy Posted July 20, 2017 Share Posted July 20, 2017 Hi guys, I'm after some help/diagnosis!! Recently there has been an intermittent squealing noise coming from what I believe, is the front of the car! The symptoms are as follows: - Whilst driving, every now and again, a squealing noise appears which at times can be loud. With the windows down, it seems to come from the front left and right. - It appears worse when steering - Can drive for several miles without any noise so it is completely random. - No noise during startup or when car is stationary and running idle. I have checked steering fluid and it is fine. I'm not very technical so in terms of belts etc, I have no idea what to look for! Any ideas? Cheers. Chris Wilson Posted July 20, 2017 Share Posted July 20, 2017 Possibly the crank damper has de-laminated and is slipping, do the Tipex test on it. Some makes of auxiliary belt make random squeaks and squeals, especially on alloy pulleys. PAS pump bearings can squeal, so can the bearings in the auxiliary belt tensioner pulley. puggy Posted July 20, 2017 Author Share Posted July 20, 2017 Thanks for the advice. I have put tipex on so next time I drive the car I'll check it. Just checked steering fluid again when engine is hot and it is below where the marker is. Could it be that it needs topped up which is where the noise is coming from? Scooter Posted July 20, 2017 Share Posted July 20, 2017 If the steering fluid needs a fair amount you may have a leak (as it shouldn't get 'used' as such), the front cooler (look in the front bumper at what looks like a kettles heating element, or in the passenger side front air duct for signs of fluid. rider Posted July 20, 2017 Share Posted July 20, 2017 I had a crank pulley break up but if you are sure that's not the issue I had a squeal on my Mk3 with a dry viscous coupling on the cooling fan. I do think that I have a minor leak, I thought it was maybe oil as I have noticed a few drops every now and again on the driveway but it is probably the power steering fluid.
