Hi all I've replaced both coolant temp sensor electrical connectors terminals and about 6 inches of wire on the top coolant elbow the single wire sensor for the gauge in the dash is getting a battery voltage and is earthed fine few the elbow but the gauge in the dash is hardly working it raises by only one line even when the engine is fully warm there's no air locks in the system I was just wondering how the sensor and gauge communicate I've just replaced the sensor tonight and it's still the same any help would be much appreciated cheers 👍🏼

If you get someone to ground the single wire for a second or two with ignition ON whilst you watch the temp gauge it should go right up to the top (and beyond if left grounded too long, so act fast). If it doesn't either the voltage regulator for the gauge, assuming it uses one, is faulty, the gauge itself is faulty (been fiddling with fancy dials and buggered it?), or the loom is faulty. It could of course be that the engine coolant thermostat is stuck part open, missing or one of those ridiculous "race" types that keep the engine far too cold for the map to operate correctly, and strictly race only, and debatable even then.

I can't really see what's going on behind it but mine has 12v and earth to the gauge, sensor wire to sensor but i also have an earth from where my sensor screws in as it doesn't connect to any metal. Like chris said, it will probably be best to get someone with a piece of wire, touch the brass fitting and touch the other end to an earth point and see what it does. It could also be that the sensor is faulty. Test it in a cup of hot water if earthing does nothing. 9v battery, pos and neg to battery pos and negative. sender cable connected to the sensor, touch an earth wire to the threaded part of the sensor and and back to the battery neg. When you put it in the water, it should start reading. Normally starts reading over 40 degrees only so make sure your water is warm but not so much that you burn yourself.
