View Full Version : Downpipe shield
For those that are still running stock DPs and cats, is there any risk in removing the shield thingy?
The rattling is annoying the hell out of me.

The shield is designed to protect the bulkhead form the heat soaked up by the cat. When you take the cat out the heat soak is gone so this is not an issue. I know this does not solve your problem but I don’t recall anyone removing one before.
Might be OK if you stuck some flexible heat shield on the bulkhead.
as Phil says...
either replace it with something else,
or,
pack it out/tighten it up with some 'more' heat resistant stuff.
the cats/downpipe are designed to get VERY hot,
that's the ONLY reason the cats work in the first place.
[ it's probably only a bolt loose/missing or it's touching the body/
chassis somewhere - might be just as easy to fix ? ? - 'till you
RIP IT OUT that is ! ! ]
I'll have a check, but just in case where does one buy this "heat resistant stuff";)

Demon Twits sell several types
I've put a BIG pipe clip round it, so hopefully its thick enough to take the heat.
and.............................silence:)
except for the engine:baa:
Fingers...... X -ed ! !
Steve.
[better than taking it out !]
Once the stock zorst is totally removed, then there are three of these sheilds still in place. I have removed one, but left the other two since the zorst is still routed under them.
The one I removed is the one nearest the driverside door, directly under the rear seats.
As a side note, is it safe for me to remove the other two shields?
I THINK they're only for the cat' areas where the heat
WOULD have 'built-up'.......
no longer the case......
where were/are the THREE shields Syed ?
Fat S.
One is where the stock back-box was, the other two are in the areas where the stock exhuast used to split in two, easy to see, if you jack up the car. :)
Hang on, what I'm talking about is a metal shroud for the pipe, two pieces that bolt around the pipe
Rob, are yours over/around the cats?
(one in front of bulkhead, one 'sort-of' under transmission tunnel)
THEY are the cat' heat shields.... (VERY necessary, if cats' are still
in-situ !!)
Syed, yours must be for 'hot-spots' (or possibly even 'noise' baffles?)
for were the stock silencers were ? ! ?
(obviously if the silencers aren't there any more, or, the
exhaust is noisier/less heat retentive anyhow - no need for heat/sound
shields ? ?
[on the other hand - it wouldn't hurt to keep them there either ?]
NB. I'm only guessing about Syed's ones - haven't looked for them
on mine yet.
This is the stock cats' & heat-shield piccie:-
Yes thats it, you'll notice the main pipe has a two piece metal cover over its full length.
THAT bit is more to keep the heat IN the pipe so that the 2nd cat'
can get get hot enough to burn something
(the first cat' is always gonna' get hot enough being where it is)
Steve.
So is it safe to remove the other two shields?
