New from belfast, looking a project car in the new year

Hi, thought id sign up here as i am contemplating building a supra for drag racing.

Iv always liked supras, but currently own a 2 door impreza that i have mosified over the last 6-7 years for use at hillclimbs and sprints.

I will be needing some supra advice to help me choose the right model to look out for.

Sofar iv deceided it will eventually be a single turbo if not already converted, but i need advise on auto vs manual.

How much torque can the toyota boxes take? Would it be better to buy an auto and then fit a sequential? Is the much involved in converting? I have noticed that autos are a bit cheaper to buy.

Any advise would be much appreciated

I believe they take around 500 - 600 unmodified.

I've heard the cost of converting to single is like 10k, you'd be better off buying one already converted.

Jeez, seems a bit steep at £10k.

If your goal is a drag racing setup you want an auto ideally. Depending if you want a full blown drag setup or a street driven car that you can take to the track and drive home? There are a few different auto choices to suit a pure drag car for example a 2spd powerglide, TH400 3spd etc. Or a more mild setup using the original factory Toyota A340 with upgraded internals with an upgraded hi stall torque converter which will still be ok to drive on the street. Auto supra's are generally cheaper to buy due to more auto's being produced compared to manual supras. But prices of both auto and manual supra's have gone up dramatically and are getting harder to purchase.

In terms of budget, depends how much you want to spend. The limits are endless...for a decent single turbo conversion done by a supra specialist using top quality parts will cost £15,000+. So that's something to think about.

Its worth paying the £10 yearly membership to unlock the full potential of this forum, there's some real great infomation on here which can help answer some of your questions. But feel free to ask any questions you may have as there will always be someone with an answer.

That's just what I've read through other discussions. Don't take my word for it, but I do believe that the total cost of converting to single and making sure your car can handle it will run up a bill like that.

You'll pick up a tt auto from anywhere between 7-10k depending on condition. I don't think I've ever seen a single turbo auto for more than 16k but people who pay more attention to supra sales would be able to give you a better idea

Wont be used for road as i have trailer etc for transport. As for budget, im unsure at the minute, but i know it will be many 10's of thousands by the time im finished, and likely take a brave few years to put together.

So it looks like a single turbo auto will suit my needs the best, tho im not ruling out a tt.

Yes, you need to be a paid up member to use the private message function.

To answer your question, you would be better off stating how fast you want to go, rather than just stating single turbo as people would be in a better position to tell you the parts you need.

You will need a built auto box, you will need a lot of supporting modifications and you will need alot more than 10k when all is said and done, even if you hold out for some second hand bargains that always come up on here.

Cheap, fast, reliable :- choose two.

Sorry, the lack of information is partly due to my previous experiance of online forums. Most newbies can be treated as dunder brains on forums iv been a member on before.

I havent dragged the subaru yet (as that is not what its built for) but its a mid-low 10s car. I would be looking to go 9s or into the 8s with the supra as a purpose built drag machine.

I know it will be more than 10k as iv already put several times that into my other car, but to change from twin to single turbo 10k is proobably about right i suppose if you are including ecu, manifolds, injectors etc etc

Mine is an auto running 525bhp @1.3bar with twin srd oil coolers and the gearbox copes fine. Im just deciding whether to fit a histall.

No problem mate, if it will just be a drag car, fully stripped out, th400, ford 9", slicks and a small single turbo setup making around 800bhp 'might' hit you're target.

As you're from Belfast, why not call into supra specialist Ireland up at Nutts corner , they have a wealth of knowledge that'll be useful for you . Ask for Colin or marty.

Double that for supra specialist Ireland , not a thing they don't know about Toyota especially Supra's, they built mine and it runs a dream ( forged engine running around 430bhp ) she done a 13 second 1/4 mile at Bishopscourt when it was automatic , they converted it to 6 speed manual and now it's s drift missile, they up in loanends outside Nutts corner

£10k for a single turbo conversion that will run 9s or 8s?!!!

Welcome to the forum, this forum is not like that and we are a warm friendly bunch. Ive personally met many people I now call friends through this club. Everyone is friendly unless you spout crap, use txt speak or utter the word 'Hovis' .... besides them simple rules almost anything goes
