Some more bad news RE: Getrag V160 / V161 gearboxes

Having seen the shocking state of the supply of Getrag V160 / V161 gearboxes, I took it upon myself to contact Getrag directly about these boxes, with a view to ordering a batch myself and selling them on.

This is the reply I've just received:

thank you for your interest in our products, i.e. the V160/V161 transmission as used in the “old” Toyota Supra´s (roughly between 1993 and 2003).

We are very sorry to inform you that …

- we have sold all our stock to our customer (Toyota Motors)

- we have no more tools left to (re-)produce these transmissions (or parts thereof)

- … thus we could not quote the required transmissions to you.

(excuse the English, Getrag are a German firm)

The disposal of the tooling basically means no more new Getrag V160 / V161 boxes, ever. The only hope for Getrag owners is a specialist reverse engineering parts, and offering a rebuild service, which will obviously be VERY expensive.

Kraut Brexit bitterness, ignore them ;) The migrants have probably nicked the tooling, but they are too embarrassed to admit it.

Can't say I'm surprised either, it is a 25 year old gearbox after all and they haven't really come into a massive demand until maybe the last 3 years or so. They build X units as per Toyota request and then move on to other projects/contracts without blinking. They'd probably be losing revenue if they just sat around waiting for supplies to dry up.

Mind you at the rate other options have been cropping up over the last 2 or 3 years I don't think it'll be too long before we have a near like for like replacement to them that'll require little to no modification. The only people that will then be after them are the concourse/purist lot.

Considering the getrag still make bulletproof gearboxes for BMW's it seems like a good option to get a decent conversion plate and run one of those.

Was hoping a reputable brand would of picked this up by now, as we just have some dodgy eastern Europeans drifters producing them, which is a bit hit and miss from my experiences.

I'm sure someone like Titan could replicate the whole gearbox, on the other hand Jacks transmission have increased their prices now for a rebuild.

Sorry, but replicating gears, shafts, synchro hubs, synchro cones, odd ball bearings and seals etcetera is hugely

expensive and far from trivial, apart from the case castings and machining. Unless Getrag had, and would sell, the tooling, and the job to make copies taken on by a major transmission manufacturer, it's a none starter.

The ratios are all wrong though. Until someone gets a like for like (or close enough) then there isn't a direct replacement unfortuantely

Tbh, considering how few have completely stock cars, the stock gear ratios aren't exactly ideal anyway. Besides, the fact that the V160 was replaced by the V161 proves that the V160 ratios were not ideal in the first place.

It makes an auto with flappy paddles more appealing now.

Come to the dark side....:D

To be fair there are a few options now

8 speed ISF box

7 speed BMW DCT box

SRD stage 3+4 box

Titan box

All of the above can be used with Syvecs flappy paddle kit. Or you have the below options...

TH400 - Although only a 3 speed box and really only good for drag racing.

ATF built auto

The 8 speed ISF box is still having the map tweaked, so not quite there yet, but is the one I'm most interested in so far.

7 speed BMW DCT box is a non starter for me, not reliable at all from what I've been told, quite a few M3 owners have had them go at less than 5000 miles.

Got to be a manual gearbox for me.

Also with the BMW 7 speed you have to upgrade the clutches to run big power, which will probably cost alot!

I must admit the 8 speed ISF conversion sounds the best.

I think I'd be most in for the 8 speed IS-F box as well. Toyota family, easier to fit, still quick gear changes and can use paddles.

Potentially facing the same issue as the V160 though. Rare and expensive used, very expensive new, and at the mercy of Toyota supplying them.

It's a shame no one has done a conversion foe the ZF box found in the Jaguar XKR, they are relatively cheap and plentiful, and must be fairly tough.
