View Full Version : speeker sizes
hi i want to upgrade my speekers, what size are they front and back and what size can i go to fit the standard places.
cheers
I took mine out yesterday, doesn't look very big but I didn't actually measure it.
I've got a 6.5" set to go in but I'm going to have to do a lot of cutting and bodging to fit them in!!! Can't see much more than a 4" fitting in the standard space TBH.

loose the plastic box fella and the 6.5"s fit nicely .. a few new screw point and job done.
Fronts are 4" and sit in a pod as stated above.
Rears are 6" but 6.5 will fit straight in.
With the fronts you can put in 6.5" but you'll have to junk your speaker pods and lash the new ones on with some MDF. Apparantly with the stock speaker grill on the door card, the benefits of a larger speaker are hampered? So if you can't be bothered to @rse around - stick 4" on the front.
If you want a bit more quality sound, use some Dynamat, at least for the rear quarters.
If you want a quick sub box solution, The halfords 10" box fits by placing it on it's back without taking anything out of the boot!- On sale now for £24!

Hi supRo
Was reading your post about the Halfords 10" box, not seen one, but you mention it fits in by placing it on it's back without taking anything out of the boot!
Where abouts did you put it in the boot ? I would like to put a sub in the back, but still have access to the spare wheel and use the boot space also (what little there is!!)
Geoff
Hi geoff,
yeah, I couldn't believe it either. i originally went for the Infinity 'Bass link' which is the all in one amplified 10" sub in a tacky plastic box...then I came up with the Idea 'What If I get an MDF 10" box and place it on it's back'. An MDF box will sound much better than the Basslink.
The Halfords 10 " actually fits standing up as normal against the back seat but it's only just under the rear glass, a pot hole may make it go through the rear window! But Placing it on it's back - no issues. I still have the spare wheel, the foam tool holder bits and the carpet - nothing needs to be taken out apart from the boot cover liner which I don't have.
When I get home, I'll give you the dimensions of the box.
I'm sure I get top marks for my highly accurate and technical diagram!
Cheers,
Ro
Ah well thats something new! I was looking at enclosure volumes today as I really want to use the 12" sub from old car. I am going to make a custom box.
If I get impatient, I might just get one of these as a temorary measure until i can get something decent sorted out. :thanku:
The 10" box 'lying on it's back' solution is probably the quickest and easiest way to get a sub in the boot without taking things out or having a custom box built.

Nice one supRo.
Diagram's not too bad ! Would be interesting to see some pics though. And dimension will be helpful.
Where are you planning on mounting the amp ?
I've also got the boot cover liner, I like this as it hides anything in the boot, would this cause problems due to the height of the sub box ?
Cheers
Geoff
Unfortuneately I've taken everything out as I was going to stick some Dynamat in the boot but the weather is too cold now! So maybe in a couple of weeks time everything will go back in and I can take a picture!
Amp - Again I've taken the lazy route - I've screwd it directly to the side of the sub box - Easy!
I don't have the boot liner (rear window is tinted) but when I check the dimensions tonight - I'll see if it'll obstruct by checking the liner fixing points.

Just out of interest, what ICE kit do you have/plan to have installed then ?
Geoff
Hi Geoff,
Got some piccies and dimensions for you!
Having read through this forum, the Focal and Infinity speakers came recommended. I'm sticking on Infinity Reference series all round. Up front I will have the 6500cs Components (6.5") and at the rear 6502i coaxials (6.5" too). Components at the back are wasted. I was tempted to put 6X9's at the back but trawling through this forum, it's not worth the hard work to stick them in. I will use Dynamat, a 'Wedge' pack per door and rear quarter.
Mind you, I heard some Alpines in Halfords and switched the sound output to Pioneer, Kenwoods e.t.c - the alpines do sound excellent and better bass definition than the others on display!
As for your question about using your boot cover liner with the sub in - I think you may have to re-position the mounts a bit.
Again, I've used some quality graphics on the pictures!
The Picture with the word 'clearance' is with the boot closed.

Cheers supRo ! The pics are really helpful.
There's no way the boot cover liner will fit properly with the box in place.
I'm still not sure what I'm going to do in terms of the ICE in my supra, but you have given me some ideas and I'm sure your post will help others too.
What amp have you got ?
Geoff
I have a small Alpine 2 X 90w amp, a little smaller than A4 size. The good thing about alpine amps are they tend to very powerful for their physical size compared to rivals. It used to sufficiently power a Pioneer 600w 12" sub. I will be using it on a 10" Rockford Fosgate Punch sub.
If your head unit has a 4 Volt pre-out that helps too as the amp is not having to work as hard as the input signal is stronger.
I'm personally not after 'big' sounds, just decent quality bass/sound. The music I listen to is RnB, House and a bit of 'everything'! My criteria is also not to take anything out of the boot and a quick uncomplicated solution. Also as the boot is exposed to the cabin i.e. the boot is not a sealed compartment - I didn't think you really have to have big subs. All a matter of musical taste I guess.
My other idea was to use the Vibe Rectangular 6X9 speakers as they are of very good quality and have won awards. I was going to have one on each corner, against the back seat in a rectangular box that houses both - You may be able to retain your boot liner cover that way?
Amplified 6X9's can rival 10" subs.
I guess it boils down to how loud you want the system, how deep you want your bass, looks and what sort of effort you want to put into it.
Here's the link for the vibe 6X9's
