Advice on Turbos

Hi everyone, you may have seen my thread saying my first turbo had bitten the dust. I'm now looking at what to do. I'm worried because I've seen posts saying that having mine rebuilt will never be the same and they will end up going again.

The other alternative is getting a second hand set but there's no guarantee that these will last or that they won't blow up as soon as I hit boost. Especially as they will be jspec turbos as I've seen another thread saying the stud patterns are different from uk spec turbos?

Any advice other than going single (due to the huge cost) would be appreciated. I can't really afford to spend too much as I've already spent a lot recently.

Many thanks in advance!

You have kinda anwserd your own questions here bud, the only option would be buy brand new from mr T if they still stock them or people have had good results with the garrett internals on the stock twins but buy the time you paid for all that and labour you could get a single kit and bolt it on and still use stock fueling and ecu and just run an afr gauge and set the boost accordingly, I did that for just shy of a year and was great fun and good on the old fuel as well not that supra owners worry about that lol

I rang Toyota and they do not sell the turbos anymore. There is no more stock! Which sucks. So run a single kit on stock ecu? That's got to be worse than stock turbos surely? I don't think we can worry about fuel with these cars lol

Why are rebuilds not as reliable as oem? Surely if the turbos are dynamically balanced once rebuilt why would they not last as long? What normally fails on rebuilds? I am curious as I have been thinking about going down the hybrid route for quite some time.

I think you're over-worrying about getting the stock turbos refurbed dude. You'll always hear the stories of them going wrong on forums but I doubt you'll hear much about ones that have been rebuilt and run like a dream for thousands of miles :)

IIRC Drift_bear has been running hybrids for years now at 500hp+ and he doesn't exactly take it easy in his Supra :D

Talking to Chris on here

I have never seen a report that a used, but seemingly working fine turbo is other than "in desperate need of a rebuild".

You need to see what state the housings are in on the turbo(s) you want to have rebuilt. It is common they may have cracked housings. My experience with rebuilt turbos is I avoid them whenever possible. They never seem to perform as well, for as long, and with as little trouble as new factory ones. I have *NEVER* seen a rebuilt turbo back to a re-conditioner and been told it had a re-manufacturing issue and was eligible for a warranty repair or replacement. it has always been wrong oil, blocked drain, wrong / no oil restrictor. Abuse, over speeding, over heating, water coolant failure, they seem to have a crib sheet they stick a pin into .

But if you are going down the rebuild route , I would try Owen Developments, CR Turbos, or Turbo Technics ; all reside in the UK

My Friend is running Munro Turbos from Australia, only downtime is postage as he has them on the shelf , they do alot of R&D with CT20/CT12 OEM units

/QUOTE]

Well I saw a thread from a while ago and Chris Wilson said they are never the same and when they do go wrong again the company who built them blame anything but their rebuild...

I also saw another thread where it related to the cores and they don't replace them in a rebuild? I'm not exactly sure what that means. I'm assuming it's the bit the compressor wheel attaches to?

Here's one of the threads: http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?209322-Rebuilding-The-CT20A-Turbos-On-JDM-6SPD-TT

Go big twins? :) or go.single like the Americans and just run it off of waste gate. With a piggie back ecu or buy a standalone and just bite the bullet.

Wait a few months to gather the cash.

I would mate but if I was going to go single I'd have to do it properly and tbh I've just not got the money at the moment to do it. I've always wanted to get things done properly or not at all.

I'm liking the advice and discussion though guys it's really helping me think about my options.

Thanks guys. This is all brilliant. The munroracing products look like serious bits of kit. That stage 4 looks amazing.

I think I'm most gutted I've lost the car again as I was really excited after picking it up! I have no idea how long it will take for the turbos to get rebuilt etc

Have you not taken a look at the whifbitz hybrids, just over a £1000 exchange , built with steel internals and can be used up to 1.4 with required mods , or just run at a bar , looks a good option to me, fit them yourself.

I think they are $$$ compared to Munro Racing , Munro setup has the wastegates ported,(in my opinion is essential to control accurate boost) , housing ported, manifold ported and they have billet wheels too

Are the munro one's for a pair of turbos as the site doesn’t actually say. I assume they are as the pictures show 2x turbos. Looks amazing value for money. I would be very interested myself.

It's getting harder to find good used ones for sure although I'd have no problem using a set if I knew their history a bit.

I would be trying to ascertain exactly what caused yours to go.

Did you shatter your ceramic exhaust wheels from a boost spike, did the seals go and your shafts wear/seize? you don't want to put new ones on if there may be an inherent boost issue.
