In short the Cams are fantastic , the head feels alive and she can really breath. BPU is quick but the brute force of acceleration with the cams is nearly on par running 0.8 bar and 1.2 bar , the comparison to OEM cams (248 Duration) is night and day as you would expect.

 

Cams most definitely do not give more power throughout the rev range but what we are altering is the delivery of whats available; Cams can, and will move the torque curve around. The big question is and a reservation I had , would I move the power band so high up the rev range I would in turn sacrifice Low end grunt.

 

Thankfully the answer to this is No , I do not notice a difference over OEM cams down low; if you where to get very critical you could argue it may of shaved about 200 rpm off down low, but it is inconsequential and frivolous. 3200-3500 rpm you start to notice the cams coming online ; you really notice the 4500+. Unlike the OEM cams she does not run out of steam up the rev line , Tomei marketing statement is accurate "Excellent pick up from lower rpm, and even greater results at maximum rpm"

 

The caveat, Cold starts or when the ECU is in closed loop; The ECU thinks there is a Vacuum leak and she wants to play it safe, run rich! She does not run rich enough to cause Oil contamination but none the less it is a PITA; She needs fuel pulled till ECU goes to Open loop, once Open loop triggers (approx 30 degrees temp) she runs fine.

 

You could live with the Cold idle and be the Cold start ECU Strategy with your right foot till she gets up to temperature but its too much a of a PITA when there is a simple solution in the form of a piggy back ECU; or you could go all Macgyver, I was even contemplating a resistor and switch toggle to the TPS to get her idling on closed loop then once she goes to open loop , toggle the switch off

 

Currently looking at options, I am leaning towards a piggy back HKS IS FCON

Great write up.

 

Another nice write up, I like the idea of these review threads, might be an idea to add a review section ;)

I'd like to see a Wiki, with a MkIV Staff Member (or Members) responsible for extracting the knowledge and putting it into a concise article. Could be very valuable to the community.

Any progress with the issues when cold?

 

I'm interested in these but not with the idling issues when cold.

 

ECU required , I looked into piggybacks but you are wasting your time, with the OEM ECU she is off the scale rich on idle , other than that she goes like a scalded cat!

Standalone and Wideband to get fueling spot on

If you go standalone, then you will have to run in TTC wont you? That seemed to the be the general consensus in other threads that I have seen. What standalone ECU are you going for? Dependant on the ECU it would be a fairly large outlay, just to add cams to a BPU car...unless future proofing for a single??

Power FC, AEM V2 can run OEM Sequential setup out of the box , but yes more recent ECU's it depends on I/O available and how creativity your mapper is.

 

Unless I cannot get a M1 mapper ; I am going to go with the Motec M130 and LTC Wideband Controller
