The "Market is up"

I thought I would start a discussion on this after speaking to another well respected member on here about some of the ridiculous prices people are demanding for essentially standard cars.

Ill not mention specifically but i am aware of someone selling a tt6 in the mid 20s, not concourse, not particularly identifiable.

I have had 3 supras, a J Spec GZ TT Auto that I paid 5,250 for with 60k on it, an NA6 with 50k on it for £4k and a UK Spec single that I paid £6,500 for. Not astronomical prices and all reasonably tidy cars.

Now don't get me wrong my own car now I would value in the mid £20's purely on cost and I'm all for cars in that price range considering significant modification and work e.g Kaans, Chris Burlos, Sheefa etc etc.

But my question is, in what way is "the market up" for people to demand £12-15k plus for pretty standard cars, not particulary tidy or clean?

Rarity is the easy answer but really they arent that rare, no rarer than when you could pick up a TT auto for £5-6k, 3 or 4 years ago.

People always say its worth what someone will pay and I don't see many people paying so what has happened?

However a well known name on the UK motorsport scene i was talking to last week was telling me that alot of the importers are importing the cars and they cant even sell them because no one will pay the money for them. There is no shortage of them sitting in the import yards in europe. Surely thats greed driving the price rather than scarcity?

There are far fewer cars around than there were a few years ago. And especially so with 6 speeds, which has had a knock on effect with others. The prices in Japan will have contributed too, as fresh imports became much more expensive (and will continue to if only for the falling £ at the moment). Plus, the last 5 years saw a massive boost in the number of Supras going abroad.

Maybe, but there are certainly less available in Japan, they'd be 30+ on the auction page when I bid on mine (near 3 year ago)

Right now, 16! And that now includes supra available from garages not just auction, which is was 3 year ago.

Less to buy, less options, price goes up, goes up there, goes up elsewhere.

Sometimes it's just sentiment and a positive market. What I'm saying is if everyone believes in the rising market then to some it makes sense to buy almost irrespective of the price, compared to a normal old car depreciation curve.

For years Supra's were under valued in my eyes but there was a steady gradual depreciation and so no rush to buy as "they'll be cheaper in 6-12mths" etc, now there is more of a underlying "get them while you still can, the price is only going one way" etc.

If the prices do go that way then the current buy at almost any price will be sound advice, I'm not totally convinced myself, but then I'm sort of biased as I'm happier when they and parts were cheaper!

There isn't always a cut and dry answer for this or any market for any product fluctuating like has done recently.

It's most certainly on the up, at the end of the day that's a positive for all current owners in my eyes.

The increasing amount being broken for parts, the F&F exposure and Paul Walker effect, the US market gearing up to import loads, the dwindling numbers everywhere else, all have an effect as well as other things.

To put it in perspective - my na5 is currently in bits, in its current state I can quite confidently say I'd get back what I paid for it 2/3 years ago when it was pristine.

Just ride the wave, it's all good for us.

Some of my reasoning is that I think the uk has some of the cheapest used cars, so various other makes and models are potentially better value/more attractive especially as time goes on, but we'll see!

Amen to that. In my country MK4, 02, automatic, 400bhp, some bpu=£30K

£30k sounds mad for a stock to BPU supra, but is the general consensus that once they reach 25 year old and the US can import them the demand/ price will increase?

To add one more thing to this debate. I imported a 94 N/A 5 spd that I bought for £3800. With the taxes added it's now worth about £5600, thats is in my country of course. And with some things done to her, like custom exhaust, LHD glass headlights and other bits, I wouldn't part from her for less than £7500.

And you must know that Supras are very rare in Slovenia, I think only three of them are on the roads, so imagine how much would cost a TT Supra in my beloved country

And to add, that is for jspec Supra. European LHD Supras are triple the cost! At minimum

The market isn't just up on supra's, s14's boomed a few years ago. R32's are still holding strong money and R33's are even on the up.

Very, very rare car. Ad to it that it 3.0petrol and wages are not impressive makes it really available only for people with cash-we obviously talking about basic stuff not extreme like some Supras on the forum:/

you could ask the same question for many cars I mean who in their right mind would think that you would pay £20,000 plus for a ford escort, my mates and I use to buy them for a few hundred pounds back in the 80's.

I think something that is underestimated when it comes to Supra values is the impact they continue to have on people. Even now, these things are setting records, 14 years after they stopped building them. As well as all the Fast and Furious association, people see these cars slaughtering all kinds of exotica on YouTube.

The nearest thing you could really compare them to in that respect would be older American Muscle cars. And just look at the sort of money they go for now.

I was at Real Street last year and saw this car. Was beautiful

Mileage means nothing to these guys as well, it had done well over 100k when I looked at the odo. Supras just don't rot over there and the fact that the engine is rebuilt means it's literally just a number

So we are all going to be stinking rich when our cars go to the states.

Hahaha somehow I dont think it will materialise that way!
