Will try to make story short...

Bought my Mk4 just before Christmas, circumstances(don't want to go to the details) after purchase were changing so dramatically that almost sold it back after one week while I was on my way out from UK to Australia. That has been now put under big question mark and most probably will stay and keep the car. It is 94 NA, 5spd manual. After a research there are two ways to start a project:

 

1) Gat the turbo kit from Paul from Whifbitz, supporting mods and maximise it to 500-520bhp as it say what this kit can do

2) Do the engine swap and put better kit and get 700bhp(my desired power outcome)

 

One of my first question to you guys is if you know someone that does it on a daily basis so I can get in touch and ask them about little things like price, how long it takes etc. It will be my first thing to sort out before I will start a build up project

Hello :)

 

The main issue you have straight away is that your W58 gearbox won't take anything like the power (Torque really) that you want. You will be limited to around 350hp-400hp, depending on how good your gearbox is. You would either need to swap to a 6 speed manual, a 5 speed R154 gearbox, or an auto.

 

As for doing a turbo conversions, speak to Either Whifbitz, SRD or TB Developments :)

if your aiming for either if those power goals in option 1 or 2 you'll need to factor in a new gearbox as the 5 speed w58 box in the car will not handle it.

 

If your looking for a single turbo I strongly recommended buying one already built as it'll save you a lot of hassle and money in the long run. Doing a build properly will cost you more than the difference in price of buying an NA and a well built single. There are two lovely singles for sale at the moment (the turtleshead's and sheefa's).

 

Having done the NA-T conversion myself previously I'm happy to give advice wherever needed but if you have the budget to build 500+ hp car I strongly recommend selling up and buying one of the two I've mentioned.

I was aware of the clutch as one of the bits to change however gear box wasn't in my consideration at all. Just had a look at the prices of 6 spd manual gearbox and they are ridiculous. I think the dif would have to be change as well?

 

P.S. @abtin90 what was the max power that you got from your one after conversion?

I'd love to know where you get these figures from Jay :tongue:

 

First of all, as you know it's the torque that kills the box, not the power.

 

I'm running mine at 1.0bar boost and it made 450hp, 420ftlb. No issues with my box.

 

At 1.3 bar your guess is as good as mine as far as power output goes, but I would imagine somewhere near to the 500hp mark and a suitable and similar torque figure. Again, no issues now for over 18 months.

 

I believe a lot of this is down to a sensible clutch choice, opposed to an unsprung puck type clutch or multiplate item.

I would slow down a bit to be honest mate. Having a figure in your head and asking how to go about it and then scoffing at the cost of a ready built UK single 6spd needs a bit of a reality check.

 

If I were in your shoes and serious about the goals I'd sell up and buy a ready made single. A TT 6spd is going to cost you 12k minimum now for a decent one. It'll cost you another 10k to get a decent 700hp setup which you'll be able to recoup a grand or 2 back from the parts you take off.

 

I've been building my car over the past 5 years to a similar spec, doing the work in my garage (other than mapping) and I reckon I've spent at least £15k. Most of my kit was 2nd hand too.

True, however it allowed me to do it in my time with spreading the cost. Thats why I was considering engine swap. Was trying to get in touch with Keron(apparently he is the right man for the job) but at the moment no success, he may be very busy or holiday etc. If I would get quote from him that would be helpful or maybe there is somebody else on the forum who does it as well?

He can be very busy. Did you try ringing him? I think the going rate is around £2500 - 3000 for engine swap but If you speak to Keron he may be able to confirm that.

I've always got through when I ring but PM's, he can be slow sometimes :)

I think probably the first thing you need to make a decision about is what you're going to do about the gearbox ;) Because that is going to cost you several thousand pounds whichever way you go. Maybe consider selling and buying an NA auto, that would be a better base for a turbo swap. :)

@j_jza80 unfortunately I'm not big fan of auto and it wouldn't make me happy to have it on my car:(

@johny g, does the tt would go with 5spd gear box?

Then your options are roughly £2k for an R154 (mkae sure it's from a Soarer), £4k+ for a V160/V161, or a custom adapter and a different gearbox for £3k ish? A much better idea would be to sell your car and buy one of the very rare 6 speed SZ-R N/A Supras. If your car is in good condition, it will probably cost you around £2500-£3k to change, but you'll have the strong Getrag gearbox. Cheaper than converting. The problem is finding one, they barely ever appear.

You could easily spend well over £19K in parts and labour to fit a GTE engine, drive train upgrades, ancillaries and doing a reliable 700hp conversion.

Before considering doing an engine swap I'd suggest getting the car given a thorough going over first by a specialist, suspension, brakes, rust worm, drivetrain, etc. if you're going to commit to spending money doing a conversion then you want to know beforehand that the car is all in good working order.

 

If you are wanting more power, my advice would be to sell the car and buy a well maintained BPU TT, not something many want to hear, as we all get sentimental about our cars but that I believe would be the most cost effective and sensible option.

So had a good night sleep since last evening conversation and this is plan that I came out for the build...(all comments are more than welcome), credit to johnny g for small enlightenment :)

It will be long journey with the build but we will get there(hopefully;)) The sequence of works maybe will be broken down in more details but at the moment it will look like that:

1) Full service(car came without service book:/)

2) Get the s***t sorted whatever will come out during the service:shock:

3) Get the tt engine(put all of the finances designated for the car towards it)

4) Get the gear box(put most of the finances designated for the car towards it)

5) Transplant of the two above

6) Go single round 700BHP, whifbitz, SRD or other recommended

7) Respray(it may happen sooner, already waiting for quote)

8) Interior (will try to gather bits and bobs on the way as we go along)

 

Bigest obstacles for me will be 2 and 3 because even if i will get the parts(counting on Keron:)) I don't have place to keep them while i live in a flat so no garden no garage or any other place to keep it. Ideally starting from now would like to finish in the end of july 2017 so can go across Europe in the car in august but we all know that there is always something that will come out unexpected but at least there will be a target to shoot at.
