Sounds like the internal nylon teeth on the mast may be past their best.

 

Might be worth removing the unit and having a look inside to see if it's the teeth on the lower end of the mast or the gearing of the motor itself or a lack of grease.

 

New masts can be purchased new from Mr T quite easily.

 

If you need one give Steve Manley a bell, or Paul Whiffin on here does toyota parts.
