Front Suspension Arms: Non OEM

Am looking to replace all 4 front suspension arms, upper and lower. Prefer to just replace with OEM if I can find them all but as an alternative, what are peoples thoughts on using aftermarket non premium arms? I don't use it as a race or track car. Deadly risk or bargain find?

  • 3 months later...

Came to fit those new upper arms today that I bought from America last year and are gauranteed to fit an MKIV Supra.. Didn't go so well as the pics show.

Called Toyota to be reminded what I already knew, £430 for the pair but discontinued.

America failed me, maybe try China?.. :help:

They are but you can still get all the bits, but obviously only till they run out.

I bought all new oem arms and components about 6 months ago, eye watering total price but it was a piece of mind thing. Atleast I know I haven't got to worry about them for the rest of the life of the car.

I plan on buying all new and getting all the arms powdercoated for the same reasons. But due to some pretty significant overspending on my single turbo conversion, I may just buy the parts next year and then just start the project when I feel the suspension is feeling tired.

However, I'm not convinced they will remain discontinued indefinitely. Toyota discontinued the rear screen seals a few years ago, and they can be bought new now.

Powder coating the new arms isn't a bad shout if I'm honest. As stated mine have been on the car for about 6 months and already starting to look abit old. Whatever Toyota coated them with isn't the best!

Maybe the new arms aren't coated as well as the older ones? I know the UK calipers have different coatings now compared to the older ones. Powdercoating works wonders, but I suspect it will be a soul destroying job pressing those brand new bushes out and then back in again. I would probably have to buy a press too.

I got these the other day, I have some used genuine top arms too so will check the dimensions tomorrow to check they aren't like your ones above and that they'll actually fit at least.

What will happen to the bushes and ball joints when they go in the oven at 200C ?

I got all my oem arms from ICP parts and TCB parts. They are the cheapest by far mate.

Whifbitz prices are a lot higher compared to both these places. Was a big difference in totals when I calculated it all up.

Isn't the point that they can't be fully disassembled? You can obviously do what you like with your new arms but they don't corrode through or anything so you are risking ruining new expensive arms for cosmetic appearance or something that lives under the car? Perhaps just wire brush and re-hammerite them in year 5?

I dont think powercoating will do much help, the metal is solid. Id be more worried about bushes and ball joints. Is it not possible to replace the baljoint/knuckles in anyway? would be cheaper for alot of us...

Nope, I need a new lower arm but was told it's a new arm or nothing. Typical...

The Soarer front arms are the same shape as the Supra ones but the bushes are different, they have more voids in than the Supra. Maybe for comfort?

From memory the other difference is there is a mid life change in the Supra arms, the diameter of the bolt that mounts them to the car changes but the Soarer doesn't have that change.

A lot of Soarer owners found that the price for the Soarer arms was almost double that of the Supra arms due to the 'Lexus' badge fest so they went down the Supra arm route.

Well here are some pics of the non genuine arms I have, which look like they will fit fine. They have the little ridge in the casting for the bracket for the abs wiring and dimensionally seem spot on. Obviously can't tell the alloy or bush quality but visually they pass the test and the German supplier don't seem too back street?

I'm going to go with genuine bottom arms just trying to decide if the facelifts are worth the extra.....
