Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems

So what's new in the world of TPMSs?

Thinking about getting something for the track car, trying to get in & out of the car (with harnesses, HANS device, helmet, roll cage, pit limits, tyres cooling) to check all four tyres during a 20min session is just not feasible.

Something like this would allow me to monitor the tyres on the fly and I could back off for a lap to allow pressures and temps to drop, once the optimums in both had been exceeded.

As always, any insights/suggestions/sources are welcomed.

Thanks.

Indeed, a TPMS strategy could be used to reduce power and speed as a safety feature, plus you could then output a warning to something like a dash, display or app ;)

EDIT: another bonus would be full datalogging of tire temp and pressure from each corner, could be handy for those doing trackdays or racing :D

Hmm, I've a Link ECU and Dash2 on the cards, it would be nice to get the full benefit of a TPMS, as you and Johnny have described, through the use of the right kind of sensors and a bit of linking.

Is the option out there for us mere mortals yet Wes, or is this something still in the development stages, or just cost prohibitive?

That would probably make a fairly decent job of it. But I'd actually prefer the display to be on the bigger side, just for ease of scanning while on the charge.

Too many!!

Next time your out , let me know , I can help you out as pit crew

I had my best friend doing that for me at Japfest and I felt terrible for him! The monitor would make that job a bit of a doddle too though. Thanks for the offer buddy. Baz's memorial day for his brother in February would be the first day I'm aiming for. Definitely need a few test days before the T/A season kicks off again.

There are CAN based TPMS modules available, in fact most newer cars that have TPMS built in use a CAN module, ie AUDI, BMW, GTR etc. Maybe one of these could be made to work with an aftermarket ECU or logger, this would be the cheapest way, there are also 3rd party modules that support CAN but they tend to be more expensive, STACK for example is very expensive.

You should be able to set them pretty accurately once you have a base setting and know what they rise

too after x amount of laps on any given day.

We just refer to previous race/test data now and set them from that

We get them pretty close to the required optimum pressures on my sisters Alfa doing this

I know there is no replacement for previous data and the more the better, giving a clearer picture of what works on a given day.

But I still think a real-time view of what is going on with the tyres is something that would benefit me no end, I tend to go to most track days and time attack rounds alone, so having the data there in front of me would let me have the base set-up for the next T/A round, where time really is of the essence.

Hold up! Let's take this back to basics

Your sister drives an Alfa and races it

I think this is what's know as a unicorn,:)
