Toms Supra
Out of interest when sitting in traffic is it best just to leave an auto in drive in put it in neutral/park? Obviously a manual you put it in neutral when Q`ing in traffic just wondering if the same applies to the auto? Someone told me but I have forgotten? Class One
Handbrake, neutral. Don't stick in P as you have to go thru reverse everytime which might (ahem) cause an accident! If you do it in a manual, whats different about an auto?
Christian
I was reliably informed it causes less wear on the box if you leave it in D - so that's what I do. I would only put it in P if I knew I was going to be stationary for a looooonnnggg time.
Toms Supra
That rings a bell Christian opposite to a manual car. Yeah Cheers thought so.

Dale B
I always leave mine in drive, unless its a long time waiting.
SimonB
So you guys are some of the people who sit in traffic with the brake lights glaring? I really hate that, it's nearly as bad as leaving your rear fog lights on... Bloomin' auto drivers...

Holly
Can't think of a nicer looking car to be sitting behind! (UK MkIV TT AUTO!! )
hadyn
i thought leaving the car in drive when stopped in traffic would feck up the gearbox, hence why i put it in N when sitting around for a while? shall i just keep it in D all day now?? Scoboblio
I always switch mine into N when sitting at the lights....like SimonB said it's annoying and glaring to the drivers behind especially at night, if you leave your foot on the brake. I'm all heart I am
Robert
I tend to just leave the transmission in D and use the handbreak, then this probably doesnt annoy the people behind me.....not like i really care of course
JamesG
One argument for putting the gearbox in neutral when stopped, is that if someone runs into the back of you, you won't roll forwards as far if the impact jolted your foot off the brake (or the clutch on a manual). I'd consider not rolling into oncoming traffic more important than the wear on the gearbox.
Robert
or just use the handbrake and you wont roll anywhere
JamesG
if you don't put the handbrake on hard enough then it still might roll forwards given a tap from the rear.
Terminator
Foot brake to stand still, apply hand brake, foot brake off. gently apply trottle for normal sensible driving. Foot brake to stand still, keep foot brake on ,anticipate lights, build revs to 3600 let off foot brake and floor it, for a blistering take off. Ian R
NY cabbies tend to leave in drive unless stationery for a long time so I assume they know how to preserve their box better then any.
suprarob
leave it in drive mate when the lights turn green you will be 100 yards down the road before the manual gets into first
SimonM
I leave mine in drive & put the handbrake on!
