mattdavies
I noticed that most people use silicone joiners on their intercooler set ups, but the OEM set up uses rubber. Whats the reason for this is it the bling factor or is silicone a better joiner ?
Chris Wilson
The silicone may have a higher burst pressure, but as I have never seen a stock pipe or pipe joiner burst it is irrelevant. the silicone pipes vary from excellent to utter junk, like most aftermarket stuff. OE rubber is less likely to blow off as silicone is much more slippery. As an aside people who fit "hard pipe" kits thinking they improve spool need to read their physics books, they make no difference whatsoever, and are purely a wallet opening exercise. mattdavies
Thank you Chris this was the answer i was looking for. I think then I will try replace the silicone bits I have with Rubber where possible. Does anyone know if rubber reducers are available ? I fitted a hardpipe kit as: 1) Was fitting a new SMIC, so it was pretty straight forward to do 2) figured that replacing the stock basic jubilee clips with constant tension clamps was probably a good idea for raised boost pressures. 3) the stock intercooler hose that sits behind the airbox, and the one that connects to the throttle both deteriorate badly with age and heat, and Iv'e seen several that contact badly. Chris Wilson
Are you having issues with silicone couplers blowing off? There are some tricks of the trade that should help, if so.
mattdavies
I am not, Just have some cheap replacements that were to do me for a short while. I have now got to the point where I am looking to replace them so I was thinking do I go Silicone or go OEM Rubber
Dnk
You can get Samco Silicon hose couplers for very sensible price from http://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk Swaged ends on the pipes usually does the trick with decent clamps, I used the Mikalors on my car and never had a problem, hair spray can also assist in stopping hoses popping off Edited August 13, 2015 by Dnk (see edit history)
MRX
Dont suppose you know the part number for the OEM hose that goes from IC into the Inlet Manifold? I need a new one of them...
