Dilemma: Break or project?

So I've had this car a year and its probably spent the majority of that time on the drive with me fixing something or other. But the last Dragonball seems to have taken its toll on the engine.

See here for my progress log and pics - MRX-Progress-Log

On the last Dragonball I had issues with a burnt valve and had to limp home. I've just replaced the valves, valvestem seals, re-shimmed etc etc also swapped out turbos for a spare set and a number of other little jobs whilst in bits. But its still smoking like crazy and i've just reached my limit. I just cant spend any more time buggering about with it, i need a daily driver I can count on and isn't going to take all my weekends and evenings.

So, I have two choices - Break or sell as a project.

Its a Facelift TT6 with a few nice bits like TRD Magnesium alloys / TRD dials / Lovely interior / fully adjustable suspension / Recaro's.

I can happily it strip down but will I actually get more for the car that way, is it going to be worth all the time and effort to do that? or should I just sell as Project?

Would be a shame to break it. Although I would happily grab parts off you (quite a few to be honest - yes I am shameless!).

Have you had the car looked at by a specialist to see what the issue is? Seems that if you have refreshed the head and turbos, the only reason for the smoke would be worn piston rings? Has the car been compression tested / leak down tested?

I would get it looked at professionally to see what the prognosis is, then make a determination. Could the smoke be residual oil from a previous leak in the exhaust system?

Sorry to read about your luck with the car buddy hope you manage to get it sorted. But if you do find yourself breaking her I would be interested in the TRD dials and the adjustable suspension depending on condition and price etc mate please.

Also the recaro's again pending the condition and price.

Kind regards.

Drew.

Sounds like your patience is understandably exhausted and you are time limited. Sell it as a project, trust me, you will soon tire of PM's, e-mails and phone calls (usually after 10 at night...) asking for the widget that goes under the wodget, but only on green Jap spec cars imported by Hussein in Milton Keynes, and could I just have the top half of it, sent to my great grannie's boyfriend in Kazakhstan, but he's only in on every other Wednesday.

Breaking cars at home is messy, time consuming, probably illegal and if you don't factor in *ALL* your time stripping, e-mailing, packing and pratting about, you are just kidding yourself how much extra you might think you are making as opposed to flogging the whole caboodle.

Thanks for all the comments and advice guys!

Been thinking on this all day and I think our man Chris Wilson is right and its probably best to sell as a project.

I have had a couple of interested PM's but i honestly just don't know how much its worth and so the only way to find out is by putting it up for auction - It owes me a ton of cash but suspect i'll be lucky to see half :(

This is my 4th Supra and probably the one i'll miss the most but I just need something right now that's a reliable daily driver and not going to take up sooo much of my time.

Cheers

Have you still got the cats fitted?!?! I had the exact same scenario on an MX5;

-VSS Gone

-Burned out valve

-Smoking it's tits off

I had the head rebuilt, fitted new VSS, re-assembled it.... It still smoked its tits off because the cats had clogged with all the oil it was burning off. I took it out for a hard drive, got the exhaust really hot, it stopped smoking after 40 miles or so, was perfect after.

Yeah i've left first cat in so as there's a bit of back pressure for turbos in case they were iffy. There's definitely oil coming through the tub seals as the IC pipe work is dripping so its definitely more than just residual oil unfortunately.

Look at all the vultures lol!

Answer the guys question at least!

tbh mate as being in the same situation. If you can't afford it now then you'll have to just sell or break it but if you can afford it and still dream of taking to the road then just get it sorted and be done with it. If that means taking it to somewhere like SRD and then that's sorted then do it but if money is an issue then it depends on if you have the patience and the means to break it. I sold my project as a whole as I didn't have the heart or the space to break it after everything I had been through.

Either way I hope things works out for you

Lovely Car Rob, before letting go of the car take it to LeeP at SRD, if nothing else you would be able to tell the potential buyer what's wrong and get more money due to this.....or you might chose to fux and keep the car...

I know how you feel I had 2 years of various things with my Supra, took it to lee and its been perfect since.... Good luck
