I have a question about speakers and my new car.

I know it has a good face unit and I want some better quality speakers to be fitted by you. I always thought Bass was shitty in the supra.

Is it possible to fit a good set of Front compnents. I have some Helix Blue components £160 worth sitting on my floor. How do you rate them?

I was also toying with the idea of fitting 2 JL audio 6 Inch subs in the back speaker areas?

What are your thoughts on this.

Good idea or just pants?

Chris.

Could work OK, depends on how well you speakers are mounted. I am currently developing large thick alloy plates for the front doors that fit where the standard boxes do, to make them easy to mount 5 1/4 and 6" mids, which will give the sort of bass VW doors produce as your speakers will have a solid mount for a change.
One of the great drawback with the Supra is the awful std door grilles which choke the sound of anything bigger than a 4" speaker in the std location. If your grilles can be integrated into your doors like the P.Gold Ti elite 6" grilles can be than you are on a winner. Than you get good dispersion, a lack of nodes in your speaker mount, and good solid bass from your doors providing you actually deaden /seal it right. I may post a "how to" sometime soon on this.
The subs, fitting them wont be that hard, but to get a level response between 35 and 80hz you'll most likely need a fair bit of eq, and then careful not to get so generous with the volume control, but a good sound is possible, as the small subs are very fast and will integrate with your mids very well instead of sounding half a note behind.
Before fitting amps to a Supra put a piece of 4 gauge earth from the battery to a clean bit of chassis so there is at least one decent earth on the car.
Good luck, the more care you take in the speaker mountings and enclosures the better your result will be.
p.s. might consider selling these door mounts to a few people as they will save them loads of time and disappointment.

All going well, these will be availabe in a few weeks time.
I suggest before buying speakers you check if the grille will fit the door panel as there aint much pint in leaving the std one. I'll post pics of the door card with a decent grille in it in the next couple of days. Hopefuly in time enough info to make supra installs not too much of a hassle for most DIY'ers.
What am I using> P.gold ti elite 5 1/4" components, but with the 6" grille as the 5 1/4 is just that bit small, and i like the strong vocals of the smaller mid.

Presumably the whole grill issue can be resolved by some clever re-trimming of the door cards? Sorry, it's difficult to visualise stuff like this (for a girl anyway)

Hey Chris - I spent a long time figuring out the best way to go with an install on the last sub - in the end I pulled out most of the lining of the boot and installed an 11" focal sub with the exact volume - the fibreglass moulding actually sicks into the wing area a little but the sound was excellent - it hardly took up any boot, and I still kept the spare wheel!

I considered taking a mould of it and selling copies.

I still have it - it's going in the new sup.

there is really no space to put in big installs for subs - and this was by far the most effective - capable of shattering the rear window - by far enough power and excellent acoustics.

Focal speakers were recommended to me by turners who win the sound quality comps year after year - they fitted beckhams f50. They are expensive but really really good - I used to be into my ice when I was younger.

They also recommended an amp which again is increadible - boston - i think it was.

All the door cards were laminated with carbon and glass, with MDF backs, and they were stiff as hell - made for much better sound. Unfortunately they went in the crusher.

back to the drawing board!

just make sure you use good cabling and keep the wires seperate.

remember the 6's wont give much punch and they have to be totally sealed and with stiff walls - hard to get the volume and do correctly in the back seat area.
