quite a big ask regarding a 6 speed supra

Right, I’ll put a bit of a back story first,

got my supra back in august had a knock (I was informed of this before purchase, but it was a bit of a bargain so I couldn’t turn it down), thought it was flywheel (it wasn’t) mechanic assures me it’s my gearbox, sent it off to 'gearbox specialist' number 1 had the box for 3 months came back worse, get it back off him, move onto 'gearbox specialist' number 2 who I’m locally recommended and assures me he can fix it, 3 months later no joy, today I’ve had enough I’m going to collect my car back bring it home and decide the next step,

so my requests, I’m now unsure it’s my gearbox or if I actually have a problem and it’s not just the nature of the supra, my heads just filled with doubt in both mechanics and myself, I’m booked up to go on DB but if it’s not sorted this week I’ll be putting my place up for grabs (if that’s still okay at this time?) but it will pain me greatly to do so as I was looking forward to it!

Is there a local member who would be willing to let me have a drive/ literally 100-200 yards just to see if this 'knock' I feel is just the v160 box, Teesside, north Yorkshire or surrounding areas? I’m willing to travel

Or request number 2; is there somebody who has a spare working v160/161 box that I would be able fit to my car, to make sure it is definitely my gearbox causing the issue? Could be in and out the car in 1-2days and then returned to the rightful owner, i would need to confirm with the mechanic a date that would work for both parties to have it in and out in the quickest time

if the latter option is available, I would be willing to hand over a substantial deposit to cover any doubt that I’m going to run off with the gearbox, as I understand I’m a relatively new to the forum and may not be trusted like a long standing member and the gearboxes hold great value

If you are near stansted airport as of next week you can drive mine but it is a single with an aftermarket clutch so may not help you.

haha I'm tempted just to have a go in a single, but i know that would end up costing me even more money as i'd have a craving for more power,

but unfortunatly i'm not around that area, cheers anyway

I have owned and driven several 6 speed Supras, if it helps I could drive yours and let you know how it feels. I'm local too :)

That might be an option i could consider also, cars is currently mot'less and taxless as its been sat up for such a period, however i plan to rectify that this week, so i may be in touch shortly

cheers

If you are passing through London then I can help out. :)

if this was last year i'd be down every other week and would of been great but i'm now never there,

I do plan to come down in summer, but i'll be taking a gallon on petrol and a box of matches to the car if its still not sorted by june/july :p

but cheers anyway

I know its hard and often fruitless but can you describe the 'knock'?

It was knocking on and off power delivery/gear changes

but being new to the supra world i was sure it was an issue with the car, not i'm not so sure, but hope to find the cause soon

Been and collected the car today, the knocking between gearchanges seems to have be sorted, so really i'm not looking to drive another members car as that issues appears to be fixed, but there is a rattle whilst the box idles with no power going through it, which goes when the clutch is pressed or reciving some power delivery

a 2nd box would still be much appreciated as that would cancel out my doubts about it actually being the gearbox,

atleast the cars home now and i can think about my next move with it,

petrol seems tempting!

That sounds like either 1, the box itself, 2, the release bearing, or 3, a rattly dual mass flywheel. What's the mileage on it?

Has anybody actually checked the gearbox oil for contamination or opened the box up and inspected it?

dual mass is new, i also got a new clutch kit from toyota so only can presume the release bearing was replaced at the same time, but will confirm that tomorrow when i collect my reciept from toyota thats at the garage

its been to 2 gearbox specilists who both assured me they can fix it, has been opened i've been told there is nothing wrong with the box, tried changing a 'preload' spring and has seemed to have no effect on the rattle, but the knocking has gone or so it would seem

mileage on the car is around 80,000m if i've got the km and m correct

My knock seems to have gone, gearbox mount is a Trd mount engine mounts seem fine etc etc

I'm left with this rattle now http://youtu.be/MXLgjs6SNiY

I come from a world of off roaded 4x4s where my finding my gear is like stirring soup untill something clicks in my gearbox half filled with oil/which ever river I've just driven through, I find the v160 box quite nice to shift and the mechanical feel quite reassuring

Also i would just like to once again thank the people who commented/pm'd offering to let me drive their cars this forum seems to have a great atmosphere compared to many other forums I am a member of

I have had a look at this tonight and defo sounds like the release bearing, the noise is still there even when the clutch is disengaged but also gets faster and louder when you press the throttle, but also sounds like it's something loose but as I said pop down and we can get her in the air and have a look

Like i said earlier i hope its all fixed by then, if not the car wont be with me, i'll start over with a fresh import i think,

However if it is done i'll be down in the supra anyway, i enjoyed seeing all the arabic supercars last year, so i think i'll spend a long weekend down this summer, so maybe a supra meet could be sorted out?

Could the Trd mount be causing a rattle or vibration? I fitted race spec engine mounts to an old track car of mine and they caused no end of noise through the car due to how solid they were

The trd mount has been fitted to the car since purchase and the rattle wasnt there before, its only of recent this has developed

but cheers anyway

Did you change the flywheel? When I got my solid mass flywheel and TRD mount fitted, it all got pretty damn rattley.
