Mid life crisis car

So, after a decent pay rise and the saying 'you're a long time dead' my thoughts are on getting a new motor.

At the moment I'm thinking of a used Aston Martin DB9.....or.....an Audi R8

Any experiences or opinions. BTW I promised myself a DB9 by the age of 50 which is 18 months away.

Budget circa £50/55K

If you're looking at modern then I'm with Jamie. I can't see past the F-Type Jag at the moment, it's a stunning car. Not sure if the coupe would be an option, as it's the one to have. I'm not up on my "cars I can't afford" values so apologies if it's outwith budget.

Looking at the above picture I ended up not seeing anything but the V12 E-Type convertible. If I owned that I think I would spend hours just sitting in it and looking at it from different angles.

I would very much recommend the V6S F-Type, although I would be tempted to hold out and buy one with a manual gearbox in a year or so

If you want a cheaper alternative, then you will get one of these monsters within budget:

But either of these Jags will depreciate. :)

If Aston is really up on the list, take one for a drive before setting your heart on it. The drive/position is a bit marmite IMO.

As are the running costs. I couldn't own a car where it would cost £4 - 5K for a clutch. I like the R8 but the performance that Rob Wild mentions would worry me.

Porsche 997C2S for the win if you want fun. M3CSL or NSX if you want something that appreciates.

A nice position to be in so choose wisely and I don't mean with your head. Some fantastic alternatives mentioned. Everyone will bring a smile to your face, but the only one you will regret not getting is the Aston Martin DB9. It's a no brainer...

You can pick up DB9's for less than £30k these days, great cars IMO... not very quick but great cabin and looks fantastic, stock exahust is way too muted.

Personally for a 50 year gift I would go with one of these...
