Shocks

Compress the spring until it has zero tension on the top and bottom seats. use an air gun to remove top nut. DO NOT *NOT* *NOT* use grips to hold the chrome shaft or the damper is scrap. Sometimes the area above the nut has flats on it to use a spanner on, but they are less than useless as the self locking part of the nut is still on the threads whilst pushing the spanner off. Some of the dampers have internal female hexagons for an Allen key. use a quality key of the exact size and hope it doesn't round out the internal hex before the nut undoes. an air gun or other drive impact gun is the best way by far. same for tightening them up.

*DO NOT* undo the nut without compressing the spring. The forces are awesome and they can kill you. I have seen them go through upper floors and roofs to be found hundreds of yards away. Some 1980's Renault front springs were about 3 foot long when uncompressed, beasts of things :) Supra ones are much more manageable, but take GREAT care!!

Now that sounds entertaining. Not so much the killing part, but seeing a spring like that fly. Got any vids? ;)

My mate stupidly decided to try that as there was a show the next day and he never had the tools for the job. He had to go and explain to his neighbor across the road why there was a spring-absent shock absorber in his garden that he needed back.

Luckily I wasn't around but what an idiot
