Matt's Red RZ-S 6 Speed 1998 VVTI TT PROJECT THREAD

Its about time I started a build thread :) which in all honesty i should have done 6 months ago when I bought the car, at which point it had been 5 years since selling my last supra (White UK spec auto with built engine).

This will be a slow thread in terms of anything major over the next few years, but probably lots of small and cosmetic stuff going on in the meantime.

The car is a Red RZ-S 6 Speed 1998 VVTI TT, it has 61,000 miles on the clock (97,000KM) and was a fresh import in September 2014, 1 previous Japanese owner with the service history, I am the first UK owner.

I plan to keep this car, and have fairly big plans over time for it including going single. Its a summer only car and is garaged over winter so wont be seeing any rain or salt.

When I first went to see the car I was sold, its was so clean as expected for the milage and being a fresh import, a great base car with a few decent mods done already, this is how the car looked when i first got it:

So first job was replace the Nankang tyres for starters with some new Vreds, a new HKS filter to replace the rank one it had in, front number plate (a stick on one for now to see how I get on ;) ) also getting the car up on the ramp at my mates work to check it all over, it:

10646701_10152342600701837_4221174418390249289_n.jpg

Then I sent the front lights to be refurbed, massive thanks to Scott for doing a cracking job and faultless communication/service:

10686599_10152342627476837_8964556870546092405_n.jpg

While the lights were being done I ordered a bride sunframe from Paul and fitted some Recaro Speed seats, they are black suade with red fabric centre's which I have fabric died black, these are temporary till I get some new Recaro's, I also replaced the rear bench with a black one which I picked up from Lee P:

Also while it was off the road with no lights during their refurb I picked up a new OEM 6 speed knob and a genuine Nardi wheel:

10420240_10152391693141837_3817965540723851787_n.jpg

The car had stock speakers in, these had to go, when I took them out they had perished beyond belief, the car now has a full set of Alpine speakers, fronts on SRD MDF brackets and rears in original brackets.

Then i needed to change the horrific Jap head unit, and also fitted a new leather gear and handbrake gaitor with red stich, thanks to J_jza80 for wiring in the head unit for me:

Another little job was new chrome dial rings as the others were cheap and nasty:

20150210_211639.jpg

I guess the biggest thing so far is the bodywork stuff, I aim to keep this car immaculate, it was undersealed when it arrived in the UK so next step was a few bits of body work including rear aerial/rear wiper/rear washer jet/rear badge removal weld up and paint, as well as color coding of the Carbon mirrors and painting of the wiper arms in matt black:

Then a new set of grade 7 NGK Irridium plus had to go in, I had no idea how long the prevous ones were in but it was idling very low, this sorted the problem right out:

I can see you had a supra before, you really know what supra to buy ! Look really beautiful!!!!

Thanks, my last one was an Auto running TTC after the engine rebuild, always wanted a manual though so just had to do it this time, dont get me wrong the Auto was amazing, if I was using the car more often or as a daily I would have gone auto or triptronic :)

Lovely car mate! Wouldn't touch a thing on the exterior. Really like them wheels, think they suit the car a treat :)

Thanks Chris, but your point on the wheels makes me think I may have made a mistake, they are already sold to another member who is collecting this weekend  it was a very tough decision as I do love the current wheels but hopefully the new ones will be just as good in a different way :)

Fitted a new head unit today, Pioneer satnav/dvd/bluetooth/usb etc, its not all back together in the video just testing it out, need to get the gps antenna and mic sorted and then its all good to go back in.

Been a bit naughtly though and earthed the parkbrake wire so the unit will play DVD's anytime and not just when parked up with the handbrake on :D

The loom was not going to fit, and I didnt want to touch any of the cars actual wiring so I adapted this to fit the loom of the current stereo:

Then realised I had all male connections and had to redo with female where required.....doh

Anyhow, fired it up and works a treat:

There was only one movie to test it out with, the quality is much better in person, it was dark and my phone isnt great for videos:

There's a HKS 3 gauge dash pod for sale in this thread: http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?319036-Big-unit-clearout&p=3993565#post3993565

Or get a stock one of these upper glove boxes to replace your airbag, and mount the gauges in it:

All the cables arrived this week for the new head-unit so its all hooked up with Bluetooth hands free, integrated satnav/gps, DVD player etc, I also replaced the old wiring looms with new ones so no more mess and crimped wires behind the dash following the jap unit that it arrived with.

Got a tip for the gps antenna of YouTube which was to use a magnetic one and mount it to the crash bar behind the dash in the car to improve signal, was impressed to see it works perfectly with full signal, and that's even with the car still inside the garage!

  • 2 weeks later...

Got the wheels back from their refurb today, here is a sneak peak, I'll post some picture of them on the car when its light.

There was a few issues trying to do the original design I wanted which involved 2 different color powder coats on the inner piece, after a few failed attempts I had them done all gold in the centre, but really happy with the result, they should be easy to keep on top of given they're all powder coated and no bare metal for polishing :)
