Potential TT6 to N/A auto Aerotop conversion - advice Please! with Pics!

Hi All, very interested in your thoughts. Especially those who have gone through the process.

Pics below are of my current car 99 facelift VVTI TT6 BPU, which I am happy enough with, but like most car fanatics your always thinking of the next car move or modification whichever depending on alot of variables!

So like alot of Soop owners I believe the Aerotop TT6 is the ultimate.

Obv it depends on you taste but ive come from the route of having a string of targas (Crx del sol, MR2 tbar turbo) and the supra has to be the king of them so il always have a want for one.

Right now I am considering buying a cheap Aerotop convert all the good parts to the Aero and sell the now 99 as a NA auto.

Im still reading up on this so I still have alot to learn. I imagine I will have to change alot of wirings looms aswell due to model differences and the entire dash/interior.

My query is what would you guys see as the pitfalls if any?

Is there an easier route to do this? ie buy tt auto and just change 6 sp box etc.

The one thing that stands out is the gearbox tunnel having to be cut and welded.

Are all the suspension components etc the same otherwise? Prop shaft etc, excuse my ignorance as im not a mechanic!

Now I would not be carrying out the work myself as its a serious task in itself so im wondering besides it being a pain is a a pretty straight forward swap as both Chassis/Body as almost identical.

The main reason im looking for opinions and advice besides it being a mammoth task is firstly the tech pov and secondly if anyone has done this had they any regrets?

The reason I ask is when I was a younger man I had a Civic ls1.5 90 bhp. I bought a older model civic SIR the boxy shape one and done a engine swap to gain 50bhp, great fun at the time but I always regretted ruining two perfectly good cars, especially the SIR as they are now classic and still making good money.

So id hope if I go down this route I wont regret spoiling a perfectly good genuine example of a VVTI Facelift TT6 for my benefit!

Ive owned my car for over a year now and have just seen a aero come up for sale close to home a cheap too.

I would also be interested in Valuations ie before the conversion and after.

I'm asking alot I know!

Look forward to your thoughts.

I wouldn't see there being much issue the only issue i could see is when you take your hard top shell to a na auto, you may find it far better and cost effective to sale the parts. ( just my opinion I am no expert ) But i also believe that you would spoil/ruin a good looking TT 6 that's genuine but it would be going to be used to create a lovely aero

The current supra that I am in the process of purchasing is basically built from the ground up from a shell.

All the internals from the donor car put into the aero shell.

you may be better off just buying a shell rather than a complete running na or TT auto aero?

Another idea buy a TT aero, and 6 speed it.

As above id personally just buy a nice clean facelift aero top shell and drop it off at a reputable Supra specialist such as SRD.

Edit: only just noticed the pictures. I agree it would be a real shame to tear the car apart. I'd personally prefer having a hardtop to an aero.

I'm a aero tt6 owner and did what you are talking about because of s crash in my aero TT-auto.

To be honest unless you have some serious garage facilities or deep pockets I wouldn't even contemplate it....

In summary - great car leave it as is... Or go buy a decent aerotop TT and keep both :)

I totally see why you would want to do this as you say the aerotop is the ultimate but your TT6 is stunning and would seem a lot of effort just to get the aero?

As for an opinion on your actual question I would imagine it would be a lot easier to buy a TT Auto aero and swap your gearbox into it?! Then you can break your current one to recoup your money!!

I'll have the wheels ;) lol...

interesting thoughts. I think the value in respecting genuine oem spec cars comes with age, I get that, hence my worry. But its just the attraction of the aero!

Would anyone have an idea of ballpark of what this could cost with the likes of an SRD?

There is a 93 black NA auto aero near me for sale for around £2700, which has got these devil thoughts moving.

Another thing I didnt highlight is it would be a daily driver so reliability would be a huge factor, Id hate to think I would be potentially living with a car badly put back together due to the scale of the task being ridiculous.

Looks like a standard Supra from the outside with aftermarket wheels and exhaust, nothing special about it (no offence intended). I think the reason why people would tell you not to rip your car apart is because its a sought after car and a rare example e.g. Late Model Facelift, VVTi, Twin Turbo, 6 Speed. As these cars get thin on the ground the last thing us enthusiasts would want to see is one less of them in existance.

I think I have gotten over the idea, having taking on points above and speaking to friends. Its the thought of ruining an good OEM car really, as I said I done it before and always regretted.

I know il be pissed come summer though when I can put my roof in the boot!

Thanks for the input

I did this, I took my 97 Facelift TT6 and bought a 97 Facelift Aero and did a full chassis swap, I would avoid doing it with a crashed donor as you want to ideally swap everything you can, the only parts that weren't swapped on mine were the carpets/ seats and rooflining.

If yours is a nice clean example, then it's a perfect donor car as you know everything is right and healthy on it.

I'd do it, but you may be in for a waiting game to find a facelift Aero(don't do it with a pre facelift).

Cost wise, after all said and done and the old TT6 sold as an N/A Auto, it cost me circa £18k all in iirc(that includes the money I lost on the TT6).
