Engine issues

Soooo I've had enough of this stupid car now.

Crank pulley went a few weeks ago, had it replaced with a second hand one from the states.

Driving along and the lights on the dash started flickering, one headlight then started... And went out.

Then the next... Then the battery warning light came on with the warning light beside it and the triangle in the middle.

Then the power steering died and headlights etc went out with the dash lights being so dim.

Then the car died...

Replaced the alternator from a 97 spec from keron at extreme performance and bought a brand new battery.

Took it out for a drive and it started flickering on the dash lights again then died and we thought it was a bad earth.

Bodyshop had resprayed the engine bay and placed the battery earth over paint.

We got it back down to bare metal and I took it out today.

It's been fine until about 20 mins ago when at every light I came too the warning triangle came on with the battery light and lights flickered again....

Got it home then it was idling funny, lights going again and power steering died.

Anyone know WTF is wrong with this dam car ?? I swear I'm very close to just driving it in to a wall and setting it alight !

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like crank pulley.

Get a friend, sit them in drivers seat with engine running.

Pop hood and watch the pulleys, get friend to turn the steering wheel.

If the pulleys slow down, the crank pulley had gone, the exact same thing happened to mine and that's how I spotted it.

New crank pulley, supra runs like a dream again.

On a slightly different note, have you checked the battery voltage with the engine running?

I had a similar problem, that showed signs of alternator failure. I tried two new ones, which still didn't cure it. Turned out, the alt sensing pin on the alternator plug had died, so a new plug fitted and its been perfect ever since

Title changed to remove the swearing and be a bit more helpful to other members.

Sorry fella, was a tad annoyed when I posted it.

Tip ex test done and it hasn't moved. Taking it over to hodge on Saturday.

I think I've had enough of this car now..... Which is a shame considering the amount of man hours and money I've ploughed in to it.

  • 2 months later...

Just a quick update on this. Car is now running like a dream. No headlight issues, no crazy flashing dash lights or flat batteries.

I found a few issues contributing to the problems, such as duff HIDs, puddle of water under drivers seat with electrical connectors lying in, very badly installed alarm, with bare wires all over the place, but the main issue was, the power cable from the battery to the fusebox was only attached to the fusebox with 1 thread of the nut so the battery wasn't charging correctly, in fact not at all.

Car is all sorted with 1 big happy joe ;)
